Today I want to tell you the terrifying true story of USCCA Member David Jackson...

A man who was forced to use his firearm to defend his family, who quite frankly, are the very reason he carries his gun in the first place.

Responding to a Verbal Challenge

A viewer asked what he should do if someone was catcalling or being rude to his wife. The right answer is: Keep on walking.
Rudeness is not a reason to pull your gun. Not ever. If you are faced with catcalling or other rude behavior, it is your job to avoid the conflict and escape safely if you can.
Now, if things escalate and the verbal assault becomes a physical assault or even a legitimate threat of physical assault, then you can use force to defend yourself. But, as always, you are required to use the lowest level of force that will stop the threat.
If someone is just being rude, making lewd or suggestive comments or simply acting like a fool, your best option is to leave the area. Even if you have right to be there, do you really want to be the spark that causes the situation to escalate? If that happens, you will have a much bigger legal headache to deal with as you try to prove that you didn’t provoke your assailant.
By the same token, if your assailant moves from rudeness to making threats of violence, then you will have the right to respond. If you feel you cannot escape the situation safely, you must choose the lowest level of force required to stop the threat. Remember, investigating officers will be looking at the totality of the circumstances to determine if you will be charged with a crime following the incident. Because of this, you need to be able to clearly articulate why you chose to use the level of force you did.
It is also important that you win the race to call 911. The first caller to 911 becomes the complainant and responding officers will arrive on the scene looking for the caller. Criminals know this very well and will often call police in an effort to get their false statement about the incident on record. When calling police, don’t make any admissions of guilt, but do provide a good description of the person who attacked you and as much information as possible to help responding officers find that person. This includes direction of travel, a vehicle license number and other information relevant to the investigation.
Never let anyone who has made aggressive or suggestive comments get close enough to touch or grab you. Create space. Use cover. Give loud and clear verbal commands ordering — not requesting — that the person leave you alone. This will help with your legal defense by turning bystanders into witnesses. Investigators will look at the totality of the circumstances, and making it clear that you wanted your attacker to leave you alone is one of the best ways to ensure anyone nearby knows what is going on.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Situational awareness will help keep you alive. Conflict avoidance is the other side of that coin. If you see something out of the ordinary, immediately formulate a plan and begin to act on that plan.

I’ve mentioned a time or two before about having several friends and family members who are not fans of firearms. I also know many people who are somewhat okay with the idea of owning guns, but they are not fans of the Second Amendment or concealed carry permit holders. And then there are those who are completely against everything having to do with guns (perhaps they are just blinded by the host of misinformation and lies from social media, TV and movies).
Whatever the case may be, we all know those anti-gun people. They may be at work, at church, in our circle of friends or even within the walls of our own homes. And I have people ask me all the time how to reach those kinds of folks. It’s different in every situation, for sure, and I don’t have all the answers. But there are definitely some things to keep in mind when interacting with someone who may be unsure about — or even against — your 2A beliefs.

1. Don’t patronize them, belittle them or make them feel uncomfortable.

1. Don’t bring up politics.

You’ll never win that battle. Ever. The parts of the brain that actively engage when dealing with the subject of politics are directly linked to the areas of the brain that help define who we are. That’s how serious people are about their political sway. In fact, “Political beliefs are like religious beliefs in the respect that both are part of who you are and important for the social circle to which you belong,” said Jonas Kaplan, assistant research professor of psychology at the Brain and Creativity Institute at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Consequently, with regards to politics, most people are highly unlikely to change their political beliefs, no matter what you do or what you say. And if you challenge them, they are more likely to shut down or become even more convinced that they are right … and you are wrong.

1. Expose them to positive firearms images, thoughts, articles and posts.

We’re living in a world full of fake news, internet trolls and out-of-control opinions. That, along with simple, fast and immediate access to social media outlets, has created plenty of bad examples of firearms usage. In addition, there are plenty of organizations out there spreading anti-gun propaganda. Keep away from these negative sources. And if you can’t eliminate them, at least try to balance them or challenge them with good sources. Arm yourself with solid information and research so you can have your facts and statistics straight. Share links to articles about those who have saved lives (even their own) because of guns. Post supportive memes showing safe and responsible gun ownership. As well, I’d highly recommend leaving a copy or two of Concealed Carry Magazine around for folks to check out!

1. Take them to the shooting range.

This has worked on numerous occasions for many people. I’ve heard some amazing and wonderful stories of those who had never picked up a gun try their hand at shooting … and love it! Except for the rogue, emotionally charged reporters looking to give guns a bad name, the majority of non-shooters and non-gun owners I have taken to the range have loved their experiences —yes, even the liberals and the feminists. Just don’t go overboard on the gun or the caliber. You want them to LIKE this, remember? Give them something fun to use and something fun to shoot. Maybe go light with a .22 and let them try a fun game of poker or Battleship. Or try using responsive or reactive targets, from steel plates to colorful balloons. (I’d advise steering away from anything that looks human or animal. Don’t start there. That may negate or destroy your efforts!) And don’t be afraid to extend follow-up invitations and, if they’re receptive, invite them to classes or training groups.

1. Be a good 2A role model all the time, even when you think no one is watching.

Always follow the safety rules. Practice what you preach. Continue to live the responsibly armed life. Don’t ever become complacent with firearms. And keep planting — and watering — those seeds. You never know if (or when) they might sprout.

I want to talk to you about something pretty serious.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...and again...

We're no longer safe in the places we once felt safest.

Assaults in churches, murders in movie theaters, armed robberies in the checkout line at the grocery store...

These headline-making events seem to be plaguing us every single day...

But two police reports listed in my local newspaper a while back showed a different and disturbing reality...

It's why I founded this organization in the first place...

But while there are many inspiring stories of self-defense involving concealed weapons, there are some that are less justified...

Take the two contrasting stories near my hometown...

A 30-year old man reported being assaulted in a park while walking with a female friend. He said he was approached by four unknown men, when one of them tried to start a fight by punching him. When the victim advised the assailants he was carrying a concealed weapon, they fled in their vehicle, and were later apprehended by police.

Now, this is what I like to hear...stories of responsibly armed citizens right in my own back yard...

But then, later that same week...

A road rage incident caused one of two involved vehicles to collide into a guardrail. A verbal exchange followed between the drivers. One then drew his concealed gun and pointed it at the other man in an attempt to discourage him from leaving the scene. The permit holder was arrested for endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and was transported to jail.

You see, there's two sides to every coin...

There are cases of good concealed carry discipline, which make us want to stand up and cheer for the good guy...

And others that frankly, ruin the image of respectable firearm-owning civilians...

t's up to us to act responsibly when we decide to take matters in our own hands, and to know ahead of time when it's appropriate and legal to draw our guns.

Practice your draw. Train to improve your accuracy. Carry your gun as a means of protection...

But, know the law...

Don't do anything stupid, careless, or reckless.

Your actions-right or wrong-affect millions of other gun owners.

Well, today's the day that many responsibly armed Americans have been looking forward to for some time:

January 20th, 2017.

Inauguration Day.

The day we close the chapter on the last four years and look to the future — to the hope and promise of what's ahead.

The day we celebrate and uphold the peaceful transition of power — a cornerstone of our country's democracy.

On this particular day, in this particular year, it's also the day President-Elect Donald Trump officially becomes President Donald Trump.

Now, regardless of what you think of President Trump — or any others who have come before him, for that matter — you can't really argue the fact that Inauguration Day serves as a crucial turning point — for better or for worse — for our nation.

It also serves to showcase the promise our new leader makes to us, the American people:

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

On so, on this Inauguration Day, just as the 44 others who preceded him have done, Donald Trump accepted the oath of office.

He also vowed:

"I will fight for you with every breath in my body, and I will never, ever, let you down … Your voice, your hopes and your dreams will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way."

I'm choosing to take these words to heart. I'm choosing to stand strong and proud as a responsible American gun owner. I'm choosing to believe in the greatness of our country, our people and our freedoms.
