I'm excited and honored to announce that the USCCA's award-winning publication, Concealed Carry Magazine, is in the running for the American Society of Magazine Editors' (ASME) "Best Cover Contest 2018."

The contest, which runs through Jan. 31, includes a whopping 280 entries from some of the biggest, most popular and most-read publications in the nation, including National Geographic, Newsweek, TIME, Glamour, ESPN, The Atlantic and GQ.

And that's why I need your help...

Think about it for a second: In places like LA and San Francisco and Chicago and New York, where many of these publications originate and where the voting for these types of contests usually take place, guns aren't exactly looked upon with favor. But we — responsibly armed Americans — have a chance to change the conversation by voting Concealed Carry Magazine to the top!

Take a look at the two covers that made the cut — our "Comfort & Style" issue and our "Concealed Carry Lifestyle" issue — and, if you would, click on over to Facebook to cast your vote by liking BOTH covers! I'd also be extremely thankful if you'd share these links with all your responsibly armed friends.

May/June 2017
"Comfort & Style" Issue

Carrying a handgun comfortably while dressing with style is no easy task. For our 2017 "Comfort & Style" issue, we featured a classic American icon — the cowboy. We met real-life cowboy Keith Janke at his stable on a cool morning.

Decked out in his own threads and tending to horses with his Springfield Range Officer on his hip, the relaxed and confident rancher exudes comfort. His distinctive cowboy hat and rugged jacket epitomize natural style.

Meanwhile, the barn's muted tones give the shot an authentically rustic feel while the sunlight peeking through old boards provides an additional eye-catching element.

August/September 2017
"Concealed Carry Lifestyle" Issue

With the "Concealed Carry Lifestyle" theme of this issue, we celebrated the diverse personalities and ways of life within the concealed carry community. Reverend Peyton, the vibrant front man of the Big Damn Band, encapsulates that spirit perfectly.

During a hurried pre-concert photoshoot, Creative Director Ken Wangler asked Peyton to play a tune. Picking on his beautiful vintage guitar, Peyton was in his element.

Sunlight spilled into the venue from a nearby side door, combining with dim overhead neon lights to create depth and balance. The purple glow of stage lights added a captivating accent color. We had our shot.

If we can outvote some of the biggest names in the publishing world, imagine the message it'll convey about responsible gun ownership, the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Amendment and concealed carry. A gun magazine winning a cover (or any) award from the ASME would be HUGE!

According to ASME, you can vote for your favorite magazine covers until Wednesday, Jan. 31. They'll announce the winners Feb. 6 at the American Magazine Media Conference in New York City.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll keep you posted on the results.

Take Care and Stay Safe,
Tim Schmidt

It’s All About You!

By Kevin Michalowski // 01/08/2018

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYntqMBRksM

No fanfare. No flashy celebrations. But can you believe that I have been doing this for 200 consecutive weeks?

When I started Into the Fray nearly four years ago, we were filming against a canvas backdrop in the back room of an old print shop. We have grown from those humble beginnings precisely because we continue to answer your questions as honestly and effectively as we can — no varnish, no BS.

So, what do you want to know? Where can we help you?
Surviving a gunfight is not just about dodging bullets or getting hits on the bad guy. It is about the training you need before the fight. It is about avoiding conflict if you can. It is about dealing with the aftermath of the worst day of your life — emotionally, psychologically and legally. We are here to help you do that and we want your input, your questions and your comments. Self-defense education is not a one-way street. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. It’s personal. So speak up and ask. What can we do for you?
Shooting for 200 More!

My goal is to keep doing these videos until I have answered every question you might have about concealed carry and personal defense. That means I should have lifelong employment, because I don’t think the questions should ever stop. We all have more to learn.

Have you seen the viral video of two men attempting to rob a 7-Eleven convenience store in Compton, California? [Warning: There's some graphic language involved.]

One of the suspects jumps over the counter and appears to pull a firearm, which he holds against the store clerk's back. The clerk, with his hands up, moves off-screen as the other suspect also jumps over the counter.

A few seconds later, an armed security guard enters the scene and fires on both of the suspects.

From the ground, one of the suspects pleads with the guard:

"It's fake! It's fake!"

The security guard responds in kind: "Oh well, mine is real." He then demands that the suspects "get up" and that they put their hands behind their backs.

The guard instructs the frightened store clerk to call 911, and one of the suspects asks, perhaps rhetorically, "Am I shot?" (Yes. Yes you are.)

Now, you and I both know there's nothing funny about someone getting shot. But let's be honest: If someone does end up getting shot, the best we can hope is that it's the bad guy, as was the case in this instance. (Although no good guys were hurt in the exchange, keep in mind that the security guard sent rounds into one of the assailants who was awfully close to the store clerk. Things easily could have ended up a lot differently.)

Beyond the bad guys getting what they deserved in this particular story, there's another lesson here … one that responsibly armed Americans like you and me already know:

A firearm is always considered deadly force.

Remember, a reasonable person fearing death or great bodily harm has every right to respond to that threat with an equal amount of force. Thus, the security guard's use of a real firearm — deadly force — can be considered a reasonable measure to stop the supposed deadly threat he faced.

The fact that the criminal claimed his gun was fake has little bearing on the justified response. After all, would you risk your life on a bad guy's word?

Luckily, all ended well for both the store's clerk and the security guard. And as for the bad guys? As Tom Knighton over at Bearing Arms points out, "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

Indeed.

Tim Schmidt

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed this week that "the NFL has denied advertising space in the Super Bowl program for a veterans group that declined to alter language about standing for the national anthem."

That group — American Veterans, or AMVETS, founded in 1944 for veterans of World War II — submitted
the full-page advertisement to the NFL, NHL and NBA.

The ad was accepted for use in all-star game programs for the NHL and the NBA, but — according to CNN — the NFL "rejected the ad because it made a 'political statement.'"

McCarthy said the NFL game program "has never been a place for advertising" that could be considered political but added that "the NFL has long supported the military and veterans."

ESPN reported that the NFL has "editorial control over the content" and "asked AMVETS to consider other options for the message," including phrases like "Please Honor our Veterans" and "Please Stand for our Veterans."

But AMVETS national commander Marion Polk wasn't backing down, instead expressing his discontent with the NFL's decision.

He wrote to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell that "freedom of speech works both ways. We respect the rights of those who choose to protest, as these rights are precisely what our members have fought — and in many cases died — for. But imposing corporate censorship to deny that same right to those veterans who have secured it for us all is reprehensible and totally beyond the pale."

I couldn't agree more. And, honestly, I couldn't help but reflect on the past — 2015, to be exact — when the USCCA was in an incredibly similar position.

Here's what happened:

The USCCA was presented with a very unique opportunity to advertise in the Official 2015 Super Bowl program. But the NFL wasn't "comfortable" with our message of responsible firearms ownership. In fact, they went so far as to ask us to exclude our full name — The United States Concealed Carry Association — from our ad!

As you can imagine, after a lot of back and forth, we ended up pulling the plug on
that advertisement.

You see, what at first looked like an opportunity to reach thousands of law-abiding Americans was really just a disappointing reminder that some people simply don't understand what we do or why we do it. Some people just don't "get it." At the end of the day, we refused to compromise our mission or tone down our voice simply because a few people at the NFL weren't comfortable with our message about saving lives with guns.

From what I can tell, it sounds like AMVETS also refused to compromise, holding steadfast to their responsibility of honoring our country's veterans.

Meanwhile, the NFL continues to show disrespect for freedom and for sacrifice. I find that incredibly disappointing.

I don't know about you, but I will continue to stand tall for our National Anthem, for our amazing veterans who have given so much and for all the precious things I hold so dear.

Maybe it's just me — or maybe it's the current -13 degree windchill — but I happen to think it's been pretty brutal in Wisconsin so far this winter. (I suppose it could also be that I'm coming off the "high" of SHOT Show in Las Vegas, where the temps were likewise well above freezing.)

There is an upside, though, to the biting cold and to spending so much time indoors: a little extra time to read. My dad used to tell me, "Tim, you'll be the same person five years from now as you are today except for two things: the people you spend time with and the books you read." I'm pretty sure he read that quote somewhere, but the idea stuck: Reading was — and still is — a huge part of my life.

I recently had the chance to revisit The War of Art, a short and powerful little book by Steven Pressfield. In it, Pressfield introduces the idea of Resistance. (Yes, that's with a capital "R.")

He writes, "Resistance cannot be seen, touched, heard or smelled. But it can be felt. We experience it as an energy field radiating from a work-in-potential. It's a repelling force. It's negative. Its aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work."

There was a time, back in 2013, when I really struggled with Resistance. Writing emails — especially this Concealed Carry Report — had become a bit of a roadblock for me. There came a point when I was putting off all that writing until the very last hour.

Luckily, The War of Art really put things into perspective for me. As it turned out, Resistance with a capital "R" was trying to sabotage my productivity!

And so I set aside an hour. I grabbed some coffee. I sat down at my desk. I turned off my cell phone. And I got to work. I plucked away at my keyboard, just a few words at first. The words turned into sentences, and then paragraphs. Some of it was bad. But some of it wasn't. I kept at it, feeling the momentum grow with every keystroke. And, before I knew it, two hours had passed. And I had finished almost all of the writing I needed to do for the entire week.

This idea of Resistance eventually inspired me to implement what I refer to as "Focus Time" here at the USCCA. I've made some minor adjustments over the years — I now call it "Focus Time 2.0" — but the principle remains the same:

I simply set aside a chunk of time and get to work.

No meetings. No phone calls. No dropping by people's desks to ask questions.

In other words, there are NO distractions during Focus Time 2.0. I have to send my emails and say my good mornings and fill up my coffee cup before my two-hour focus time starts. It sounds crazy, but it's amazing what this uninterrupted time and focus has done for my productivity.

I can personally attest to the fact that I get a heck of a lot done when I consciously and consistently set aside this time. In fact, there are some days (I might even venture to say most days) when I get more done in those two hours than I do for the whole rest of the day! Morning works best for me, but you can put aside time whenever you want … as long as you actually do it.

Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but keep in mind that Resistance doesn't just affect your work. Resistance doesn't want you to hone your shooting skills. Resistance could care less about your family's safety.

Keep in mind also that the key to kicking Resistance to the curb is to simply sit down (or stand up or go inside or go outside) and get to work.

Thus, you don't have to spend all day studying gun laws or reading Concealed Carry Magazine to stay informed — although certainly do the latter if you're so inclined. And you don't have to spend all day at the range to keep yourself sharp. Schedule a few hours for yourself, and stay focused. I think you'll be amazed at what you'll discover about yourself and what you're capable of in just a short amount of time each day.

I promise you'll be better/smarter/stronger/safer for it.

Take Care and Stay Safe,
