[h=2]SCCA: SportsCar magazine's December 2016 issue available now[/h] Monday, 28 November 2016

SportsCar

In September 2016, the Sports Car Club of America hosted its mega road race, the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Taking place at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the first time since 2005, this year's winner-take-all premier amateur road race attracted more than 500 competitors to the challenging Lexington, Ohio, road course, with only 28 drivers earning one of the coveted SCCA National Championship trophies – and SportsCar magazine was on hand to cover each race in brutal detail.

In the December 2016 issue, SportsCar (sister publication to RACER and RACER.com) dedicates more than 50 pages to the event which has in the past attracted such competitors as Mark Donohue, Scott Sharp, Boris Said, Randy Pobst, Bobby and Graham Rahal, and Michel Galati, to name a few. Speaking of Galati, the five time Runoffs champion turned professional racer returned in 2016 after a near two-decade absence from the Runoffs to contest the E Production class – a race he started from the pole.
The December 2016 issue also contains an interview with Neil Verhagen, who is now the youngest Runoffs champion, besting the previous record held by Graham Rahal. At age 15, Verhagen turned heads with both a spectacular qualifying effort and unbelievable race performance in Formula F.
SCCA's National Championships aren't all held on pavement, however, as the December issue illustrates with SportsCar's coverage of the 2016 RallyCross National Championship. Held at the National Balloon Classic in Indianola, Iowa, this potentially diabolical event drew more than 100 competitors to fling dirt in the most competitive way.
Members of the SCCA receive SportsCar magazine each month as a benefit of SCCA membership. The issue is available in both physical paper form and online through the member login at www.scca.com. Join the SCCA now and read the December issue of SportsCar tonight.

[h=2]SCCA: Inside SportsCar magazine's January 2017 issue[/h] Monday, 26 December 2016

SportsCar

Hitting mailboxes right now is SportsCar magazine's January 2017 issue. SportsCar, the official publication of the Sports Car Club of America and sister publication to RACER and RACER.com, follows up its November and December 2016 championship coverage issues by highlighting an SCCA member's journey to the 2016 Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships this past September. While he'd autocrossed locally, Peter Lindberg decided it was time to head to Lincoln, Neb., for his first time at SCCA's annual National Championship event; his adventure is highlighted in the cover story entitled "The Rookie."
Also in the issue is a feature about what SCCA racers should do to prep for the upcoming competition season. On the list is to check helmet and harness expiration dates, service the fuel cell and perform an engine evaluation via processes like a leak-down test. The magazine also covers skills SCCA racers should acquire during the off-season, like learning to weld, how to mount tires and how to align a car.
Finally, the magazine offers an in-depth look at how to fine-tune a car's handling via the art of swaybar adjustments.
Members of the SCCA receive SportsCar magazine each month as a benefit of SCCA membership. The issue is available in both physical paper form and online through the member login at www.scca.com. Join the SCCA now and read the January 2017 issue of SportsCar tonight.

[h=2]Racer Media & Marketing embarks on fourth decade as publisher of SPORTSCAR Magazine[/h] Tuesday, 03 January 2017

RACER

As the official publication of the Sports Car Club of America, SportsCar magazine has been in circulation since 1944, then known as Sport Wagon, and since 1984 one company has published every issue. With the recently mailed February 2017 issue the Irvine, California based Racer Media & Marketing, Inc. has commenced its 10th consecutive contract to publish the magazine on behalf of the SCCA.

"I've been in the media and publishing business since the mid-1970s, working on magazines like FORMULA, Finish Line for the SCCA's Cal Club region, Alfa Owner for the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club and il Quadrafoglio for Alfa Romeo" said Racer Media & Marketing founder, President and Executive Publisher, Paul Pfanner. "But, I have to give a lot of credit for all the relationships and the market-leading position that we've been able to build over the years to winning that first publishing contract with the SCCA. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with the SCCA National Office staff directors and members, and we simply couldn't ask for better partners."
Pfanner began publishing SportsCar with the January 1984 issue under the auspices of Pfanner+Catheron+Brown Publications, which eventually became Pfanner Communications, Inc., and then merged with sister company Racer Communications, Inc., which published RACER magazine and RACER.com. The majority of Racer Communications, Inc. was purchased by Haymarket Publishing in January 2001, and Pfanner continued to serve as president under Haymarket majority ownership. Pfanner departed the company at the end of 2005 to re-launch Pfanner Communications as a marketing and brand consultancy in partnership with long-time SportsCar and RACER publisher, Bill Sparks. Pfanner and Sparks returned to repurchase the group in March 2012, renaming it Racer Media & Marketing, Inc. Across all those iterations, the SportsCar publishing contract has remained within the same core publishing team.
"We've remained as publishers of SportsCar for 33 years certainly due to the exceptional service, quality and partnership our team has been able to deliver to the SCCA," says Pfanner. "Many publishers might have been able to offer the same thing. However, no publisher has ever matched the sustained passion and knowledge we bring as genuine racers and life-long SCCA-members to working on a daily basis with SportsCar. There's just no substitute for that level of commitment."
Pfanner was an SCCA Formula Ford competitor and served as SportsCar's art director, editor and racecar track test driver for the prior publisher from 1978 through 1979 before starting his own company. SportsCar's current editor, Philip Royle, is the longest-serving editor in SportsCar history, having been with the company since 2005. Both Royle and SportsCar Associate Editor, Jason Isley are SCCA Club racers and autocrossers. In 2015, Royle earned an SCCA National Championship Runoffs National Championship victory in the T4 class while Isley has scored three consecutive SCCA Runoffs H Production class silver medals (2014-2016) and a pole position in 2015. Isley also has four SCCA Solo National Championships in the mid-2000s to his credit.
In commenting on the company's milestone 10th Publishing Agreement with the SCCA, Royle said: "SportsCar magazine is a vibrant record of SCCA's remarkable history. As an active member of the SCCA, I take my job as the editor of SportsCar seriously, not only because the magazine is read by SCCA's highly engaged participant members each month, but also because it acts as witness to today's great accomplishments within the Club. The records that are broken, the titles that are won and the safety innovations that are created are all chronicled in SportsCar, placing these modern-day SCCA legends alongside the likes of Mark Donohue, Paul Newman and Jim Downing in the annals of history."
Editor-in-chief of both RACER and SportsCar, Laurence Foster is in unique position to view where SportsCar resides among motorsports publications.
"Every day we have the privilege of covering motorsport from the highest levels to amateur racers of the SCCA who compete not for financial reward but for a true love of the sport," says Foster. "That's something worth celebrating, and it has always been the mission of SportsCar to represent and record that passion."
SportsCar is published 12 times annually, and is included as part of every full membership in the Sports Car Club of America. With 65,000 full or part-time members in the club, SportsCar is audited by the Alliance for Audited Media with more than 35,000 print copies distributed per month. Multiple-member households (that are a common trait of SCCA membership) only receive one copy.
SportsCar's team of editors and writers also contribute regular content about the SCCA to North American market-leading motorsports media properties RACER.com and RACER Magazine.

[h=2]Inside SportsCar magazine's March issue[/h] Friday, 24 February 2017
SportsCar
magazine, the official member magazine of the Sports Car Club of America, has released its March 2017 issue, featuring an in-depth look at the SCCA's own racecar, the Spec Racer Ford produced by SCCA Enterprises. From its release in 1984 through today, SRF (along with the third generation of the racecar dubbed the Gen3) sees participation rivaled only by the ubiquitous Spec Miata – quite a task considering Spec Miata suspension kits have outsold SRF chassis sales three to one. These numbers show the dedication of SRF racers and the durability and reliability of SCCA's Spec Racer.

Also in the issue, SportsCar dives into one of the best parts of amateur motorsports: contingency offerings. Why do major manufacturers like Mazda, Honda and Mini, along with a slew of tire and other parts manufacturers, pay amateur racers when those racers score top-rank finishes at national-level races? Some of it's marketing, but as SportsCar's editors discovered, there's often a deeper level of commitment at the source.
Rounding out the issue is an interview with SCCA's Chairman of the Board Lee Hill, discussing everything from SCCA's ongoing presidential search to redefining the Board of Directors' role in the club as a whole.
Members of the SCCA receive SportsCar magazine each month as a benefit of SCCA membership. The issue is available in both physical paper form and online through the member login at www.scca.com. Join the SCCA now and read the digital version of the March 2017 issue of SportsCar tonight.

[h=2]SCCA Hoosier Super Tour - Hallett Day 2[/h] Sunday, 09 April 2017

SCCA / Image by Mark Weber

As the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli visited Homestead-Miami for Round 2 of the 2017 Trans Am Championship, Ernie Francis, Jr., and Gar Robinson secured victories in their respective 102.15-mile races. Likewise, Randy Kinsland would secure a win in TA3, while Brian Kleeman grabbed his second consecutive victory in TA4.
The win marked the first in the TA class for Ernie Francis, Jr., in the No. 98 Buoniconti Fund/ Beta Tools Ford Mustang, after stepping up from the TA4 class where he won three consecutive championships. Francis had seemed destined to secure his first win last round at Sebring after leading much of the race before having his hopes dashed by a simple oil filter O-ring. Today, at his home track of Homestead-Miami, Francis was able to put together the complete performance in front of friends and family – shooting out into the lead on the first turn of the race and never looking back.
"This couldn't be more special," said Francis. "Winning our first TA race, on our home track, in the brand new car – I can't even explain it. The car ran perfectly every lap out there; we were able to pull a gap out front over everyone else. When the restarts came, we still had plenty of car underneath us. The Pirelli tires were good the entire race; we had the pace in the car the entire time. When we needed it, we had the speed; and that helped us win the race."
Over the first half of the race, Francis built nearly an 8-second lead on second position, turning a new track record 1:17.496 lap in doing so. However, Francis would also have to manage traffic, two full-course yellows and a last gasp charge by fellow Miami-area local RJ Lopez, in the No. 06 Republica Brewing/ ACP Chevrolet Corvette.
"It took some extra work to manage the traffic," said Francis. "There were plenty of lapped cars, and some weren't giving as much room as I would have liked around the track. You just had to be safe with it; it's not worth risking the car – you make decisive passes and those are the ones that help you build up a lead out there. But we had the power and consistency from start to finish; these Pirelli tires let you turn in qualifying-like times early on and still help you over the last few laps."
The win is 24th in Trans Am, across all classes, for Francis, who is still only 19-years old. While Francis held the lead for the entirety of the race, minus the start, the top five behind him was in constant flux with Lopez, Stanton Barrett, in the No. 33 Ojai Energetics Ford Mustang, Amy Ruman, in the No. 23 McNichols Company Chevrolet Corvette, Cliff Ebben, in the No. 36 Stumpf Ford/ McMahon Group Ford Mustang, and Daniel Urrutia, Jr., in the No. 13 Ferrea Racing Components Chevrolet Corvette, all featuring.
RJ Lopez would comfortably finish second, while Urrutia would outlast Cliff Ebben for the final spot on the podium, completing a Miami-area sweep of the podium. Ebben would finish fourth, while Amy Ruman would complete the top five.
The TA class top ten also included, in order, Vinnie Allegretta, Tomy Drissi, Kerry Hitt, Steve Burns and Henry Gilbert.
In the preceding independent TA2 Muscle Car Challenge, presented by AEM, Gar Robinson, in the No. 74 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, emerged victorious out of a rollercoaster-like 102.15-mile, 45 lap race that featured nine lead changes and five different leaders. Robinson began the race on pole, swapping the lead with Cameron Lawrence, in the No. 19 Class Auto Centers Chevrolet Camaro, over the first five laps before dropping back to second, as Justin Haley, in the No. 99 Justin Haley Motorsports/ Mike Cope Ford Mustang, took the lead on lap eight.
Robinson would then retake the lead on lap 13, only to be passed by Dillon Machavern, in the No. 24 Heritage Motorsports Ford Mustang, on lap 20. Robinson would fall back to third, with Haley in second, and remain in that order until lap 37 when the No. 99 of Haley suffered a broken rear end and was forced to enter the pits. Robinson would assume second position running closely with Machavern, the race leader, before overtaking the No. 24 for the lead on lap 42 and holding position past the checkered flag.
"That was probably one of the hardest races of my life," said Robinson. "It just required so much self control. I had to watch the guys go by me! But while they were up there I could watch what they were doing – and they were using up their equipment. I gambled that Justin's (Haley) result was going to be what it was, so I waited. Once he dropped out, I just hung up there with Dillon and played it from there. I think it went pretty well!"
Homestead-Miami has proven a challenge for Robinson in the past, with the No. 74 being forced to pit for two consecutive years due to tire issues. Robinson insists that his focus remained on finishing the race on the same set of rubber as he began the race but found the speed and consistency in the new purpose-built TA2 Pirelli P ZERO tires to push for the win.
"The primary focus wasn't on winning," said Robinson. "The only goal was to keep the tires under me, to finish with the same tires on the car as I started with –something I hadn't done before at Homestead-Miami. The Pirellis worked out excellently; they gave you the speed you needed—they never really fell off. The consistency really worked out for us, so thanks to Pirelli for all the work they put in... I'm looking forward to killing off a few more of their tires this year!"
Machavern would finish second, while Robinson's teammate Shane Lewis, in the No. 72 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Racing, finished third after a race long battle with Cameron Lawrence and Lawrence Loshak, in the No. 5 Pennzoil Platinum/ ETE Reman Chevrolet Camaro. Lewis' finish gave Robinson Racing yet another double up on the podium to commence the 2017 schedule; for those efforts Robinson Racing was awarded the Pitboxes.com Crew of the Race and Crew Chief Jim Fraser was awarded the Traq Gear Crew Chief of the Weekend Award.
"The crew has always been just excellent," said Robinson. "I can't say enough good things about them. You have to understand, I've been with them since I was born. They've always been the best crew I've ever known. Jimmy (Fraser) has been like a second father to me; I think my crew is one of the best in Trans Am and I think one of the best in racing. Between Norm, Jimmy, Dave and Ross you have over a century's worth of experience in Trans Am – and the results show that!"
Dillon Machavern's drive from 10th up to first and eventually finishing second was declared the COOLSHIRT Systems Cool Move of the Race. The TA2 top five was completed by Lawrence Loshak, who finished fourth, and Cameron Lawrence, who finished fifth.
The TA2 top ten also included, in order, debutant Moses Smith, Louis-Philippe Montour, Tom Sheehan, Carlo Falcone and Matt Parent. The fast lap of the race, a 1:21.141, was turned by Justin Haley, surpassing the previous TA2 race record handily, a 1:22.961. In fact, all but four of the TA2 cars logged fast laps quicker than the previous track record.
TA3 and TA4 also competed on the weekend, joining the TA class in the multi-class with Randy Kinsland, in the No. 11 Kinsland Racing Chevrolet Corvette, and Brian Kleeman, in the No. 07 DWW Motorsports Ford Mustang, securing wins.
For Kinsland the TA4 class win marked a career first in his tenth appearance after five second place finishes and several occasions of last-lap heartbreak. Today, Kinsland put together a complete race – starting on pole and leading every lap, managing the No. 11 through traffic and heat alike, and turning a new class record 1:23.346 lap as well.
"It's a great feeling to finally make it to the top," said Kinsland. "You get down to those last few laps, and you're wondering, 'what's going to break now?' Then I started to suck a little air, so I was wondering if I was going to run out of gas too. So the car made the distance – I didn't really want to see the cautions, but I think they ended up helping me out."
Kinsland was joined on the TA4 podium by Sebring victor, Mark Boden, in the No. 46 Fall-Line Motorsports/ Calypso Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, who finished second and Conor Flynn, in the No. 95 Irish Mike's Automotive Porsche 997, who finished third. Fall-Line teammates, Tim Kezman, in the No. 4 Fall-Line/ Calypso Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, and Tom Herb, in the No. 16 Fall-Line/ Calypso Porsche 911 GT Cup, would finish fourth and fifth, respectively.
Brian Kleeman's victory marked his second in a row, setting him up for an early lead in his pursuit of the TA4 Championship. Kleeman's No. 07 suffered a blown rotor in practice, with the team scrambling to rebuild the car in time for qualifying – a successful effort. Kleeman would set pole, survive an early race battle with Todd Napieralski, in the No. 39 Tremec/ SKF Chevrolet Camaro, and set a track record 1:25.296 lap on his way to the top step.
"That was a strategy race for us if there ever was one," said Kleeman. "I mean, tire-wear, heat, traffic – we were just trying to manage everything, trying to get out in the lead and then just not burn up the tires. The yellow flags helped us out a little bit, but also let Todd (Napieralski) catch up. And as good as these Pirellis are, they just get beat up at this track and they were pretty done by the end of the race. This feels like the start of something for us; the guys have really dialed in the car and put in so much work this weekend. It looks like we should do pretty well this season, so I'm pretty proud of that."
Napieralski would finish second while TA4 debutant JR Pesek, in the No. 00 Rennsport KC Ford Mustang, finished third. Chris Outzen, in the No. 97 DWW Motorsports Ford Mustang, and Steven Davison, in the No. 2 DaVinci Plastic Surgery Aston Martin Vantage GT4, completed the top five with fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.
Napieralski's Total Performance Racing team was awarded the Pitboxes.com Crew of the Race for their effort in fielding the No. 39 this weekend after having a motorist clip their trailer between races, leaving the team with a rental hauler fielded by a single crew member. Tim Kezman was awarded an additional COOLSHIRT Systems Cool Move of the Race for finishing fourth after a last minute arrival, forcing the No. 4 to miss qualifying.
The TA2 race was completed with a caution. The TA, TA3 and TA4 race underwent caution twice: a first full-course yellow that lasted from lap 31 to lap 36 after the No. 33 of Stanton Barrett hit the wall in turn five after a cut tire, and an ensuing yellow from lap 37 to 40 after the No. 99 of Competition Sunday at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit was top notch as racers took advantage of the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCAŽ Super Tour's only Mid-States Conference stop for the year at an event shared with the Southern Conference and hosted by SCCA's Arkansas Valley Race Group.
E Production racer Matt Reynolds, in his No. 71 Reynolds Bros. Racing/Hoosier/JPM/OS Giken/Vintage Connection/G-LOC Brakes Mazda Miata, dominated the weekend with wins Saturday and Sunday. That makes six EP wins in a row as Reynolds also went back-to-back at NOLA Motorsports Park and Circuit of the Americas Hoosier Super Tour events earlier this year. Reynolds now walks away from Hallett's 1.8-mile, 10-turn circuit with a lead in the EP Nationwide Points Championship.
"Car felt great today," Reynolds said. "Having the Hoosier Super Tour Nationwide Points Championship lead right now is great. That was our goal going into the season and we'll see how things shake out going into the Runoffs. It's good to know the car is working really well. But that also puts a little bit of a target on our backs."
Charles Hearn, driving the No. 37 Noble Racing/Hearn Contractors Volkswagen Vortech in Formula Vee, is also sitting pretty in the Nationwide Points Championship after double wins this weekend at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. In fact, Hearn has managed wins in five of the six Hoosier Super Tour races he contested this year, only finishing second in one race at Circuit of the Americas.
"I definitely intend to attend the Runoffs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It would take a lot to keep me away from seeing that yard of bricks," a grinning Hearn said after climbing from his winning car. "The thing that crosses my mind is that Andrew Whitston won one of my races, so I look forward to racing against him again. And maybe he and I can work together to run away from defending Runoffs champion Michael Varacins."
Then there's B-Spec competitor John Phillips. He took two wins this weekend in his No. 43 Phillips Race Prep/Hoosier/K-Tune Honda FIT. While the weekend's wins at Hallett were easy, that doesn't mean Phillips' entire season has been a cakewalk. He fought hard for double wins at NOLA and COTA, and has earned a perfect eight-for-eight record this season. No surprise, he also currently leads the B-Spec National Points Championship.
"This is awesome. I love doing this," Phillips said about competing in the Hoosier Super Tour series. "I love traveling all over the country. It's busy, but it's fun. I'm just building up for the Runoffs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway later this year."

[h=2]Hoosier SCCA Super Tour season hits midpoint[/h] Sunday, 16 April 2017

SCCA

Saturday racing at VIRginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, opened the sixth round of Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour competition for the year. The more than 350 drivers participating in the event, hosted by the SCCA's North Carolina Region, took to the 18-turn, 3.27-mile circuit in what was the eleventh of a 22-race season – the series' 2017 midpoint.
The action started right off the bat as a 50-car Spec Racer Ford and Spec Racer Ford Gen3 group took the green flag in the day's first race. Robeson Clay Russell had the pole with a qualifying time more than a full second faster than Brian Schofield in the second grid position. But it was Schofield who jumped to the early lead.
A five-car train formed behind Schofield and Russell that included drivers such as Charles Turner, Scott Rettich, Greg Obadia and David Anzalone. After only a handful of laps, Russell moved to the front in what became an ongoing exchange for the lead between himself and Schofield for most of the race. But as the laps counted down, Rettich entered the fray and also held the top spot for a bit.
Rettich, Schofield, Russell and Obadia were all still in the hunt as the final lap began. At times, the competitors were two abreast around the course. As the group descended out of turn 14, also referred to as Roller Coaster, Russell spun while Schofield and Rettich were side by side. As the duo reached the finish line, it was Schofield in his No. 61 PM Racing SRF3 who eked out the win.
"I actually had a corneal ulcer yesterday," Schofield said after the race. "I spent all day yesterday in the emergency room with an eye doctor getting work done on my eye. I usually wear contacts when racing, but today was the first time I ever wore glasses. I had my hands full because things got sweaty and I was having a hard time seeing."
Another 50-car field enthralled spectators when the Spec Miata class took to the track. Front-row starters Tyler Kicera and Alex Bolanos hooked up early to establish a bit of a gap back to the rest of the pack, and spent a good portion of the event exchanging the lead between one another. But SM ace Jim Drago was able to close that breach to make it a three-car battle as the race neared it completion. On the final lap, Kicera and Bolanos traversed a great deal of the circuit side by side, but it was Kicera in his No. 44 Kessler Engineering/Flatout/Carbotech Mazda Miata who reached the finish first.
"I was planning to work with Alex the whole race, but we just couldn't shake Drago. He managed to hang right in there and did a great job," Kicera explained before heading to the victory podium. "This is really a special win for me because it's my first one here at VIR. This is one of the few tracks I haven't been able to win at, so this feels really good."
Excitement Saturday continued with a 20-car Formula F fight. David Livingston Jr. held the early lead with Zach Holden, Andy Brumbaugh, Ryan Bjerke and many more in hot pursuit. The frantic field was a thing of beauty as it serpentined down the Roller Coaster hill, a bright sun glistening off colorful bodywork. Brumbaugh worked his way to the front, but was overtaken by Holden a few laps later. However, Brumbaugh hounded Holden for the rest of the race and managed to come home first in his No. 26 Blackhound Creative Werks RF-98.
"It was a good race," Brumbaugh said. "It was Zach and I, just the two of us, for a long part of the race. I made the winning pass on the back straightaway and hoped he wouldn't be able to draft back by on the front straight. And thankfully, it worked – barely."
Once Saturday racing was completed, a bluegrass band got things jumpin' at the all-participant party that featured delicious BBQ. Drivers, crew, volunteers, family and friends all joined together as a singular, fun-loving club to enjoy an awesome evening. But bright and early Sunday morning, the Hoosier Super Tour season moves into its second half with more excitement from VIRginia International Raceway. Competition begins at 9 a.m. local time with 35-min or 16-lap morning and afternoon races. Follow all the action live at www.scca.com/live.
