More tube frames and fiberglass. Round up the usual suspects, you already know the names. And someone forgot to wake up the Weather Steward. I'm actually with Mr. Hobbs on this one..drivers should make the choices, not the officials. The tail should not wag the dog. Starting lineup's screwed by that "Fast Five" inverted start crap, but the race comes back to the *real* fast five. It rains. It dries out. And y'all can see the Road Atlanta mud. Red rings on pants cuffs forever! I don't need my region patch to show other folks where I come from..

Racer Media & Marketing, Inc, North America’s largest, independent general-interest motorsports publisher, has acquired Vintage Motorsport, the leading publication covering the historic (vintage) motor racing scene. The acquisition includes the print magazine title, known as “The Journal of Motor Racing History,” along with the digital and online assets including vintagemotorsport.com. D. Randy Riggs will remain on board as the magazine’s editor-in-chief.

Vintage Motorsport now joins RACER magazine, RACER.com and SportsCar, the official magazine of the Sports Car Club of America as titles published by Racer Media & Marketing, Inc (RM&M). In all, RM&M (across various business iterations) has been publishing motorsports content since 1979.

“We are very excited to bring Vintage Motorsport under the RM&M banner,” said Paul Pfanner, co-founder, President and CEO. “It is the most respected title covering historic motor racing – and racing history more broadly – in North America. As the new stewards of the brand, we will proudly carry the standard into the future while using the cross-platform promotional power of the RACER brand to expand the base of Vintage Motorsport’s audience.”

It’s not RM&M’s first relationship with Vintage Motorsport, having provided publishing services in 2001-02.

“I’ve been a reader of Vintage Motorsport since 1986, and would personally like to congratulate outgoing publisher Michael Silverman and editor-in-chief D. Randy Riggs on their success in making the magazine the respected leader in coverage of historic motor racing,” added Pfanner.

Beyond its coverage of historic motor racing, Vintage Motorsport also broadly covers classic car auctions, concours, automobilia and other cultural happenings as they relate to historic race cars and personalities. In fact, in a reader survey, 75% say they refer to Vintage Motorsport before making an automotive hobby-related purchase.

Vintage Motorsport has come a long way from when it began as a simple newsletter in 1982. We’ve seen firsthand how this segment of the market has grown every year since,” said Riggs. “The time is now to take the next step in our evolution. As part of the RACER portfolio, we will have access to a new audience and a richer social media presence that will take Vintage Motorsport to new heights.”

Outgoing Vintage Motorsport Publisher/CEO Michael Silverman noted, “This is the closest thing to a perfect fit you’ll find in publishing, as Vintage Motorsport will expand the footprint of RM&M to include its authoritative and award-winning content, and RACER’s expertise, resources and proficiency in both print and digital content delivery will ensure Vintage Motorsport’s continued success and expansion. Most notably, D. Randy Riggs will continue at the editorial helm of Vintage Motorsport, and as he has proven for more than two decades, he is decidedly up to the task.”

Both RACER magazine and RACER.com have registered impressive growth since 2012 when the original founding group retook control of the brand. Audited magazine circulation has grown 165%, and RACER.com is now averaging over 420,000 unique visitors per month according to Google Analytics. Total digital audience for May of 2019 topped 1 million users when combining the web presence with RACER social media platforms.

“RACER has always been about the people and the power of motorsport. We go beyond the results to get to the real stories that shape motorsport across a number of levels and genres,” said Laurence Foster, RACER’s editor-in-chief. “With Vintage Motorsport, kindred spirits have been united, and while RACER has some historical features, with Vintage Motorsport, we have the chance to shine a brighter light on the cars of the past that are still competing today.”

RM&M will begin publishing Vintage Motorsport with the September/October 2019 issue on sale August 15, and assume control of the online and digital assets with immediate effect. To subscribe to Vintage Motorsport visit https://racer.com/vmsubs.

At the halfway mark of season two of the SCCA Spec Racer Ford Challenge Presented by the Skip Barber Racing School on iRacing.com over 350 drivers have taken part in the action. That is making for some pretty solid racing on the virtual track. We have made a change to the way we track the races for season two, making it a little easier to watch from the outside. Instead of individual race action, we’ll be taking a look at the points race and focusing on how that battle is shaping up week to week.

The season thus far has been a status quo with Zachary Le Vey leading the points, but he has some tough competition not far behind with Tommy Bordeaux just 25 points back. A new face, John Young, was able to bump Dustin Decker off the podium this week to round out the top three. That position is far from secure though as Decker only trails by 4 points!

From there, fifth, sixth and seventh are all separated by less than 80 points, which puts most of the top ten in a tight battle. A surprise finish at any single race could really shake up the rankings. New-comer Steve Owens is doing well to slot into seventh place, just 39 points behind Brett Holton, who was in and out of the top five all last season.

Top 10 standings this week:
Position Name Points
1 Zachary Le Vey 550
2 Tommy Bordeaux 525
3 John Young 311
4 Dustin Decker 307
5 Brett Holton 239
6 Steve Owens 200
7 Jeffrey Minor 167
8 Joel Bruns 118
9 Suraj Pradhan 116
10 Zachary Rivard 111

This season is only at the mid-point so there is lots of racing left and lots of battles yet to come. Around this time last season, Tommy Bordeaux was able to upset the entire podium by pushing himself all the way to the top step displacing Zachary Le Vey. This season Le Vey seems to have a slightly firmer grasp on his lead, but it is truly anybody’s race. If you want to be a part of the action, sign up at: https://www.scca.com/pages/iracing-scca-srf-series.

Races are going all week long and are scheduled about every two hours during the evenings, so there are plenty of chances to get your name on the board. You don’t even have to race every week to stay competitive. Log on and get to racing.

Default Gordon “Duck” Waddle Hutchinson, KS – a former Sports Car Club of America racer

Remembering Gordon “Duck” Waddle

Hutchinson, KS – “Duck” Waddle, a former Sports Car Club of America racer and instructor who was a fixture at Elkhart Lake’s Road America for decades (and a friend to the VMeNews editors), died Monday (March 1.

A statement from Road America said, “The entire staff at Road America extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Gordon “Duck” Waddle, who passed away peacefully Monday morning in Hutchinson, Kansas after a courageous battle with cancer.”

A veteran of the United States Air Force and Marine Corps who raced and instructed for half a century with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and Skip Barber Racing School, Waddle’s career encompassed earning five divisional SCCA championships and one national SCCA championship.

“Duck was a fixture at Road America for decades, making it his home away from home during the season. He was admired and revered by racers and driving enthusiasts the world over for his wealth of experience behind the wheel and always having a funny story to tell at the end of the day. A gentleman racer all the way until the end. Goodspeed, Duck Waddle.”

In a 2015 interview with the Sheboygan (Wisconsin) Press, Waddle commented about Road America: “I started teaching here in 1987 and it’s been my summer home ever since. I get to sleep and live on the property. It’s great, but the best part is the atmosphere and the people. The attitude here at Road America is to ‘get it done, get it done now and get it done right.’”

People are the real reason it can happen. Often it is remarkable people that truly make an event special. No doubt long-time Road America chief George Bruggenthies knows this, and proudly displays memorial decals for Duck Waddle, Carl Jensen, and Jeff Green on his 1970 Surtees TS-8.

The SCCA Archives strives to preserve a racing treasure trove that isn’t necessarily a standard size

Sometimes people struggle to see the big picture. But in the case of the SCCA Archives, the challenge was properly storing the big picture – literally finding place to properly preserve the many oversized items that comprise an important part of the collection. And to that end, SCCA Archives technicians at the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) in Watkins Glen reached out to the SCCA Foundation for help in finding a solution for SCCA’s larger items in the Archives.

Foundation Board member Bob Eddy answered the call and commenced a nationwide search for specialized large format, flat storage cabinets of the type often found at architectural firms and art studios. An initial lead to used cabinets in an abandoned office in Oklahoma did not pan out, but a second lead to a source in Roanoke, Va., resulted in pay dirt – 11 five-drawer steel cabinets and one 10-drawer cabinet in excellent condition and available immediately. Bob even negotiated for the drawers to be delivered to the IMRRC’s storage facility in Montour Falls, N.Y.

Thanks to the generous donations of so many people during the year, including participation in the popular annual Sweepstakes fundraiser (reminder: tickets for the F1 VIP trip and Skip Barber school are still on sale until Sept. 3), the Foundation was able to fully fund the purchase and delivery of the desperately needed storage cabinets. “The new flat storage cases are the best way to preserve the oversized graphics of the SCCA Archives,” explains Archives technician Rick Hughey. “We have tons of posters, circuit maps, racecar blueprints, and some autographed flags from the Runoffs.”

When the SCCA Archives relocated to the IMRRC, in consideration of the space and storage constraints, Head Archivist Jenny Ambrose had her team concentrated on other parts of the collection for which there were available storage facilities. The ability to now work with the large-format items opened a whole new world of what she describes as hidden treasures.

“Now that we have the new cabinets, the SCCA Archives technicians started the process of unpacking and unrolling the large-format graphics,” explains Ambrose. “The early race posters from tracks and air bases from all over the country that Joe and Rick have discovered so far are truly remarkable. These posters from the 1950s and 1960s nicely complement the Archive’s many early race programs, another strength of the SCCA collection.”

Having this important collection of SCCA history preserved in the right manner in the proper facilities for doing so continues to be a core mission of the SCCA Foundation. The great work being done by Ambrose and team at the IMRRC would not have been possible without the generous support of so many SCCA members over the years. But most particularly, we remember and honor the significant contribution of longtime SCCA member R. David Jones in financing the relocation of the several trailer-loads of materials to Watkins Glen. While we will miss his presence at our Club meetings and events, his legacy continues to benefit the SCCA through the ongoing work to preserve the Archives.

This feature appeared in the July 2019 issue of SportsCar magazine.

Maybe it's time for SCCA to start a museum.
They collect enough money from members, spectators, workers and sanctioning for races.

Default SCCA Solo Nationals Part 1

Who Will Win: SCCA Solo Nationals Part 1

By: SportsCar magazine | 8 hours ago

On Sept. 3-6, 2019, some 1,300 competitors will gather in Lincoln, Neb., for the ultimate autocross showdown: the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championship. Each year SportsCar magazine’s crack team of prognosticators take shots in the dark in a futile attempt to predict who will win this storied event.

Predicting the winners of the Solo National Championship – SCCA’s winner-take-all annual autocross shootout – is always a challenge. Even with a collection of ProSolos and Solo Championship Tour events throughout the year giving us clues about who is either continuing to be fast, who has learned something new since last year, or who has picked the right new ride and done the right things to make it fast; there are a lot of variables that affect the outcome of these four days of competition.

Today we will take an up-close look at the Street category, which includes everything from powerful sports cars to mild daily drivers, with only minor modifications.

Super Street R continues to maintain its status as its own category. While the freedom to change classes just by swapping from Hoosiers to a 200-treadwear tire means we may see some fluidity in entries, we expect to see Porsche driver Alex Muresan and Corvette drivers Grant Reeve and D.J. Alessandrini chasing the always-fast Sam Strano in a somewhat shorter list than we’ve seen in the past. Watch for Shelly Monfort at the top of SSRL to add to her extensive collection of jackets.

Erik Strelnieks, SS Acura NSX. Image by Gotcone.com

Super Street has no shortage of talent or vehicle diversity. Corvette driver Doug Rowse will face off against Porsche drivers James Yom, Pat Salerno, Ken Motonishi, Rachel Baker, and G.J. Dixon. There are certainly course dependencies there, whether it is dry or not. Erik Strelnieks seems to have figured out his NSX. He’ll be fast if it’s dry, and the hybrid factor tilts things farther in his direction if it’s not. SSL has been quiet during the season, but we’ll go out on a limb and pick Iven Dudley in the Strelnieks NSX.

A Street may be the toughest class to call. The list of contenders is long. We’ve got the Cayman crew led by Ryan Clark and Kit Gauthier. Our money is on the Corvette contingent, and not just due to their profusion. William Bostic, Cam Withell, John Wolf, Greg Janulis, Josh Luster, Matt Jones, Todd Kean, Charles Krampert, and Kevin Wenzel will likely be chasing Vivek Goel for the win. We say it a lot, but a wet course would probably change our pick. It’s just a bit too early to make that prediction. We have not seen much of defending champ Jesse Gautier in ASL this year. That should help Lana Tsurikova, but we’re going to give the nod to perennial class-jumper Donna Marx in a Corvette.

B Street will be a large class with a plethora of new faces and vehicles. The wild card here is the Tesla, where acceleration might best be described as a trip through hyperspace. If it’s wet, the Tesla is probably unbeatable. Even with the near-guarantee of rain at some point during the week of the Solo National Championships, most classes will probably wind up with at least one dry run on each course, so we have to make our picks based on that. Chris Cox has been leading the Tesla charge, so to speak, but will likely end up watching at least one of the old-school cars take this one. We’ll see Jeremy Foley attempting a repeat in the Emmert BMW 1M, Jay Balducci, Jason Bucki, and David Marcus in M2s, and Eric Campbell in an M4. Then there are the guys we expect to battle this out. For instance, Brian Peters is all but unbeatable, and is likely to bring a 1LE Camaro to Lincoln. But Mark Daddio has a Shelby GT350 as does Jadrice Toussant, and we think Daddio will get it done. It’s hard to bet against any of these guys. BSL should be among the largest of the L classes. Defending champ Shauna Rios, Youmna Zalzal, and Meredith Brown will battle this one out.

C Street is almost sure to be won in an ND Miata. After that, the pick gets more difficult. Ken Houseal, Darrin DiSimo, Rick Cone, Ricky Crow, Maurice Velandia, Jonathan Lugod, and Paul Frey will be chasing the always-quick Mark Scroggs. CSL’s defending champ Tara Johns is off to the CAM world, so we’ve got to pick someone else. Marchell Fletcher should contend, but we’ll give the nod to Shari McCoy who was awfully close to Johns last year.

D Street has had a shakeup for the year with the addition of the Focus RS and the return of the Audi TT. Dennis Sparks will return in his traditional Subaru. Last year’s win by a Civic Type R could be repeated, as Javier Reynoso has been seen occasionally, and he’ll be joined by Mike Leeder and Brian Kuehl, but we’re really expecting the Focus drivers to be hard to beat. Watch for Ryan Otis to take a close one over Mike King. DSL looks like a great matchup between Stephanie Reynoso and Lacey Otis with some serious course dependencies, with us hedging our bets on the all-wheel-drive pilot.

E Street will continue the age-old battle between the MR2s and the Miatas. Eric Peterson, Brandon Dean, and newcomer Joey Green carry the Toyota banner. Matt Waldbaum and Charles Matthews will be the Mazdas chasing Bartek Borowski, who has been slowly developing a new car but, as always, will be ready in September.
The familiar names in ESL have all gone elsewhere. Karen Babb is jumping into that void to add to her extensive collection of jackets.

F Street has been Jeff Cashmore’s domain of late, and we see no reason to expect a change this year. Fellow M3 pilots Tommy Layton and James Cathers look to be the strongest contenders. FSL looks like Denise Cashmore’s next championship.

G Street has grown considerably in the last couple of years to the point where it is one of the larger classes. This year should continue that trend. Kenneth Tsang will be quick in his GTI, while Brian Anthony has shown that the Focus ST is still a contender, but the Civic Si seems like the car to beat. Lance Keeley will be trying to stay close to Ron Williams. That won’t be easy. With Barbara Seeger off to the Open class, we have no clue who to pick in GSL.

H Street has developed some interesting diversity. Cameron Goode brings a Honda Accord. Russell Bloom, Nik Finn, Allen Kugler, and Jinx Jordan have Civics. Philip Mitchell, Alex Piehl, and Steve Brolliar have Fiestas. Greg Reno still has his Mini, and though there are a lot of contenders, we have to lean toward him. Laney Bloom has quietly become unbeatable in HSL, so we’ll pick her despite seeing Ginette Jordan and Denise Kugler registered here.

And don’t miss the Solo National Championship action as it happens via SCCA’s live timing and scoring plus video streams, both of which can be found here.

Presented by
The Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs is the winner-take-all title fight for SCCA road racing glory. For 2019, this on-track battle Virginia International Raceway from Oct. 11-13. Each day, RACER.com will explore some background stories from the 56th running of the Runoffs. -Ed.

Father and son race B-Spec together

William and Stewart Black (pictured above) showed up at the Runoffs in nearly identical B-Spec cars, but the father-and-son team’s involvement in SCCA racing goes back much farther.

“We started off when I got licensed back in 1988,” William Black said. “I started with a Spec Racer and Stewart would come to the track with me; he was just a little kid then! We were Cadillac-Oldsmobile dealers at the time, and I started racing a Showroom Stock Olsmobile Calais, and we ran at the Runoffs back in Atlanta.”

The Blacks have always been GM loyalists when it comes to their race cars.

“When VIR was reopened, my son came up and took a driver’s school and got licensed, so we started racing together. We’ve campaigned a Cadillac CTS-V in various configurations. We decided to race in B-Spec when it came out, so we built the Chevy Sonic. We took turns racing that car, and built another one this year. Now here we are at the Runoffs together!”

Of course, the natural question with a father and son in identical cars is, who’s faster?

“I’m afraid Stewart is faster now,” William says. “We’ve tried switching cars and that helped a little bit, but I’m afraid age is creeping up on me.”

Formula Vee gets disc brakes

The Formula Vee class has been mostly unchanged since the early 1960s. The cars are based on a 1200cc Volkswagen Beetle donor car, using the engine, transaxle, front suspension, and four-wheel drum brakes. This year, for the first time, Formula Vees are allowed to use disc brakes. However, not all drivers have been convinced to make the change.

“Originally the discs were slower than the drums,” says three-time FV champion Roger Siebenaler. “I’m still running drums only because I haven’t had time to work out the bugs. I’m letting other people do that work for me. It took them half the season to work out the bugs.”

Michael Varacins’ Formula Vee disc brakes.

For the low-power FV cars, the issue is drag. Disc brakes always generate a little drag between the discs and pads, while drum brakes can be adjusted to rotate freely.

“When the rule change first came out we weren’t crazy about it,” says Alex Scaler of Advantage Motorsports. “We thought it would take away part of what makes Formula Vee what it is. One of the reasons the field is so big is that the cars don’t change year after year. But when the rule came out, we decided that since we were trying to be cutting edge in Formula Vee, we had to try to make a system that would be better than any other. So we took the rules and we put together our system.”

Both Advantage and seven-time FV champ Michael Varacins have produced disc brake conversion kits for FV, and several drivers are running those kits at the Runoffs. FV racer Andrew Abbott was fastest in the first day of qualifying, on disc brakes.

SCCA workers make the Runoffs go

It’s a well-known fact that every SCCA Road Racing event relies on a large community of race enthusiasts who rarely get to drive race cars. Yet these dedicated people show up early and stay late at hundreds of racing events across America throughout each year. They watch the track, inspect the cars, time the laps, and solve the problems that come up.

At this year’s National Championship Runoffs, over 500 workers will turn up throughout the course of the week to make the event possible. Most travel and lodge at their own expense, and some stay for the better part of two weeks to make the event possible. Each of these people is an expert in some part of racing operations.

The largest specialty is Flagging and Communications with over 110 workers. Tech comes in second with more than 70 individuals. Other larger specialties include Timing & Scoring, Race Administration, Paddock, Grid, and Stewards. However, every worker is essential to the smooth running of the event.

If you ever wondered why so many SCCA racing cars carry the words, “Thanks Workers” somewhere visible, now you know.
