The 2018 Dakar Rally is underway after 139 bikes, 92 cars, 49 quads and 44 trucks revved their engines on the start line in Lima.

Stage one out of 14 consisted of a 150-mile liaison from the Peruvian capital up the Pacific Coast to Pisco, where a 19-mile special stage took place.
It was a short but tactical start to the 40th edition of the legendary rally raid race, with drivers potentially not wanting to open the road on Sunday and leave a trail for their rivals to follow.
Sunday sees a 166-mile special stage looping around Pisco, with 90 percent of the route off-piste.
Car
As he did last year, two-time winner Nasser Al-Attiyah put his foot to the floor right from the get-go to win the opening stage of the race in his Toyota Hilux.
The Qatari opened up leads of more than two minutes over Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. Al-Attiyah will cede to Matthieu Baumel for the next stage.
"I don't want a strategy because I trust my co-driver Matthieu," he said. "Tomorrow, if we open the road, I know it will be very difficult, but I'm just really happy for today, tomorrow's another day. We try to do our best."
Sebastien Loeb finished five minutes behind as he struggled with a brake failure on his Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi just two miles into the special stage.
"Our brakes bailed out on us after 3 kilometers," Loeb said. "The special was just 30 kilometers long, thankfully. The handbrake wasn't working and we had no way of slowing down. We went slowly, doing our best not to get stuck or bogged down. There were dunes with steep descents, so I had to stop accelerating 200 metres before that to avoid any risks.
"It was quite tricky, driving without brakes is exasperating. It was a difficult start, oh well!"
Bike
British history-maker Sam Sunderland has been sleeping in an oxygen tent to prepare for the race this year, and the Red Bull KTM Factory Team rider got his title defence off to a blistering start by posting the fastest time and winning the stage in front of Adrien van Beveren and Pablo Quintanilla. Teammate and 2016 winner Toby Price was more than three minutes back in 14th, with Laia Sanz coming home 12th.
Quad
Chilean Ignacio Casale, the 2014 winner and 2017 runner-up, got his race up and running with a confident victory by crossing the line one minute ahead of defending champion Sergey Karyakin. Frenchman Sébastien Souday took third.
Trucks
Very little separated the top three trucks on stage one but it was Czech Aleš Loprais of the Tatra team who claimed the win, overcoming Martin van den Brink and 2017 champion Eduard Nikolaev in his Kamaz Master.

The M-Sport Ford World Rally Team has confirmed that Bryan Bouffier will drive a third Ford Fiesta WRC for the team at two rounds of the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship – Rallye Monte- Carlo and the Tour de Corse.

A past winner of both rallies, the Frenchman has expertise when it comes to understanding the challenging conditions that have come to typify the two legendary events. He won the Monte when it was an Intercontinental Rally Challenge event in 2011, and three years later when it was back on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar, he came close to a second victory with a Fiesta before having to settle for second place behind Sebastien Ogier. In 2013, he won the Tour de Corse when the Corsican event was a round of the FIA European Rally Championship.
"It's great to have Bryan on board for Rallye Monte-Carlo and the Tour de Corse. When it comes to these events, it's fair to say that his experience is unrivaled," said M-Sport team principal Malcolm Wilson. "These are two of the most specialized rallies on the calendar and the conditions and tire selections can so often determine who succeeds. With Bryan's knowledge, we will have another string to our bow as we look to defend our championship titles."
"I honestly didn't think I would get an opportunity to drive this car – not even on test – so I am very excited," said Bouffier. "It's always a great pleasure to work with Malcolm and the M-Sport team, and their amazing success in 2017 makes me very proud to work with them again.
"Monte and Corsica are two very different events, but they are also two of my favorites. They're the two 'French' rounds of the season and it is always a pleasure to drive on home soil – even more so with this new car!
"My plan is to be relaxed and to have fun. I would also love to score some manufacturer points for the team – that would just be the icing on the cake!"
Rallye Monte Carlo opens the 2018 WRC on Jan. 25-28, with the Tour de Corse, Round 4 of the season, is set for April 5-8.

It was by far the longest stage of the 2018 Dakar Rally, but Tim and Tom Coronel posted their best result of this year’s event so far. In the stage that covered almost 500 kilometres, the Jefferies Buggy clearly showed its speed with Tim behind the wheel. The twin brothers continued to post competitive split times on their way to an impressive top 30 result. On Monday, the Dutch duo will have some time to relax again as the stage has been cancelled altogether due to flooding. “A super day,” Tim started his report from the bivouac. “At the beginning of the stage, we had a little issue with the rear brakes. The tyre deflation system overheated and started melting.

Once we saw that the rear tyres lost pressure, we quickly stopped, disengaged the hose and we were able to continue. Twice, we stopped to deflate the tyres for a dune crossing. We just did it in a clever way. No hurry, we just drove consistently and that brought us our best result so far. It is getting better and better every day, so it is a pity that the stage on Monday has been cancelled. Tom’s navigation was spot-on, so we will really be able to show something nice during the final days.” “It simply was really beautiful day,” Tom added. “Even though it was a bit thrilling. There is no assistance during such a marathon stage, so we had to ensure nothing broke.

Fortunately, things were going really well. I see that Tim is getting to terms with the car better and better. He is driving more and more smoothly. Everything is more automatically, so he becomes more a unity with the car. I am a racing driver myself and I am sitting alongside him, so in fact, I feel the same. That is really great. People ask me every day when I am going to drive, but for me, it is fine like this. Don’t change a winning team. I really don’t mind, I am feeling fine the way it is. Tim is asking me every morning whether I want to drive, but it is okay like this. It is not that I am not willing to take the risk, not at all, but I am simply enjoying watching him drive.” Once again, the enthusiasm by the local Dakar fans was enormous.
Goose bumps all over for Tom: “We just drove into the village, really unbelievable. No other drivers are getting a reception like that. And I am not saying that to pat myself on the back, because I don’t need that at all. It is fantastic to see how people appreciate the way we are doing what we do. That is the unique emotion of the Dakar rally. Goose bumps all over.”

Coronel brothers fully ready to take on new Dakar adventure LIMA – Preparations are now finally done, the 2018 Dakar adventure can start! Fine-tuning has been completed and the brawny Jefferies Buggy passed the final checks without any issues. Tim and Tom Coronel can’t wait to start the 40th running of the Dakar Rally. After their successful double finish in the 2017 event, this year has a new challenge in store for the Coronel brothers. Instead of driving their famous buggies solo in the rough South-American countryside, the twins are now sitting alongside each other in the brawny American buggy built by Damen Jefferies. Together, they hope to make it to the finish once more.

The endurance test was a real exhausting affair for the brothers in previous years, but they want to enjoy it to the max in 2018. Preparations went well and the final detail work was carried out by the team, assisted by Jefferies staff from the US, in Peru. ‘The Beast’ passed scrutineering and is now waiting in parc fermé for the start on Saturday afternoon local time. ‘Tim and Tom Gordon’ Tim will be taking on his eleventh Dakar Rally and got a privileged treatment during the final administrative checks. “I was allowed to take priority lane,” he laughed. “All the checks went quickly and without any probems, so now the party can really start.

We were already jokingly referred to as ‘Tim and Tom Gordon, so our car really did make an impression! The fans are very enthusiastic again as well, always fantastic to see. For me, I am really eager to go, too. Being here at the start is something very special every year and taking on this advantage with my twin brother is making it even more special.” Tom added: “Everything seems fine, we are full of confidence. The atmosphere within the team is quiet and relaxed. We are happy with the support from the Americans who know the car really well. We share the same passion, so we connected well from the outset. Being part of this again is great, the whole field is ready to get going.

Everything is in place, the final details have been taken care of and we are good to go. The car is working well, we will be facing a very calm and nice start. To be honest, I have never experienced it in such a relaxed way.” Sharing the car together with his brother doesn’t mean any extra pressure: “What we did in the past years wasn’t very healthy. I wouldn’t wish to my biggest enemy what we had to endure. Being in the car together with my brother for 15 days will be tough as well. Sometimes we can be quite cruel to each other, but we are twins, so that ensures a special connection. That is something only twins will understand.
At one time, we can be swearing and shouting at each other, but ten seconds later, everything is all right again, so I am sure we will be fine.” The adventure is starting in earnest on Saturday with the first sand dunes awaiting. Tim says about the strategy: “I will start driving, Tom will take care of the navigation. We will be alternating in the cockpit every day. Whether that is allowed? Well, nobody will notice the difference anyway!”
