[h=2]Subaru Rally Team USA partners with DBA[/h] Thursday, 11 May 2017

Staff

Subaru Rally Team USA has entered a technical partnership with high performance brake rotor specialists Disc Brakes Australia for the team's stage rally program in the 2017 American Rally Association Championship. Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) will provide custom developed brake rotors to the team for use on the two Subaru WRX STI rally cars of team drivers David Higgins and Travis Pastrana.
"Disc Brakes Australia has always been popular in the Subaru community for building great brake rotors. But we really wanted to show the capabilities of our rotors in the most demanding motorsport we could think of" said Yoni Kellman, Sales and Marketing Manager DBA USA.
Subaru Rally Team USA (SRTUSA) is managed by Subaru technical partner Vermont SportsCar. The stage rally team will is spearheaded by defending eight-time Rally America champion David Higgins and former four-time Rally America Champion Travis Pastrana. Higgins and Pastrana compete in the newly formed 2017 American Rally Association (ARA) National Championship behind the wheel of highly customized Subaru WRX STI rally cars.
Vermont SportsCar began working with DBA USA earlier this season to develop and test brake rotors for the team's stage rally cars. The DBA USA rotors were first utilized at the Oregon Trail Rally last month, where SRTUSA took a 1-2 finish, with Pastrana edging out Higgins by just 10.5 seconds. Higgins and Pastrana renew their friendly rivalry at this weekend's Olympus Rally, in Washington, May 13-14.
With four decades of manufacturing experience and unsurpassed knowledge through research and development, Disc Brakes Australia has positioned itself as Australia's most awarded manufacturer and a global leader in brake rotor manufacturing.. DBA sets the bar in quality, tolerances, premium metals and manufacturing equipment that delivers premium quality disc brake rotors. For more about DBA visit www.dbausa.com.

[h=2]Paddon keeps cool as WRC rivals falter in Italy[/h] FIA

Rally Italia Sardegna leader Hayden Paddon remains in control of the leaderboard after Saturday morning's loop of three stages as some of his nearest rivals hit problems in the final stage. The Hyundai driver has marginally increased his lead, now over Estonian Ott Tanak, and has crucially stayed out of trouble on stages he loves and that suit the i20 Coupe WRC. With the gaps opening up more, Tanak now sits 13.8 seconds ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala, the Finn climbing from fourth last night.
This morning's stages have proved tricky and tough, the opener in particular as hanging dust made for poor visibility. Paddon powered on, however, seeing it as an opportunity rather than a disadvantage. Fastest time underlined his commitment and the Kiwi was able to extend his advantage to 13.1 seconds over Neuville in this single stage. Maintaining a comfortable pace over the following two stages, he was one of the few drivers to avoid problems and arrives at the mid-leg service 9.4 seconds ahead.
Tanak, third last night, was losing the brakes in the final stage but was still fastest and has otherwise fared well. Latvala has been pushing hard but then furiously lost out in the last test when he was held up by Mads Ostberg, who had stopped to change a puncture.
Thierry Neuville has been hit hard this morning. The Belgian was pushing in second, with a fastest time in the middle stage, but then had no brakes for the whole of the last test, losing him over a minute and two positions. Juho Hanninen has moved into fifth for Toyota, benefitting from Ostberg's puncture, the Norwegian dropping from an overnight fifth to eighth.
Esapekka Lappi has exercised a bit of caution this morning, not entirely confident on the slippery stages, and while he too got held up in the dust of Mikkelsen – who also stopped to change a puncture – the Finn remains upbeat in only his second outing for Toyota. He is now sixth with a reasonably comfortable advantage over Sebastien Ogier. The Frenchman struggled for traction and then he too had to change a wheel in the final stage. Mikkelsen continues to try different settings on the C3 WRC and is ninth with Eric Camilli rounding off the top 10.
Dani Sordo, Eflyn Evans and Craig Breen all returned under Rally 2 regulations this morning, but Sordo once again hit problems with an intermittently working gearshift.
In the FIA WRC 2 Championship category, Jan Kopecky continues to head the field and has nearly a minute in hand to Ole Christian Veiby. Nil Solans also remains in control of the Junior WRC category but now leads Nicolas Ciamin in second and Terry Folb in third.

[h=2]Citroen WRC asks Meeke to 'step back' for Rally Poland[/h] Sunday, 11 June 2017

By RACER Staff / Image by McKlein/LAT

Citroen Racing is asking Kris Meeke to "take a step back" after a string of disappointing results, instead going with Andreas Mikkelsen for Rally Poland after a season-best eighth in the Rally Italia Sedegna. The team's lineup will feature Craig Breen/Scott Martin, Stéphane Lefebvre/Gabin Moreau and Andreas Mikkelsen/Anders Jaeger.
"After a series of disappointing results, we have asked Kris Meeke to take a step back for this next rally," said Yves Matton, Citroën Racing team principal. "Kris accepted that this would be in the best interests of the team and we'd like to thank him for his understanding. This break will give him the chance to recharge his batteries and release some of the pressure before preparing for Rally Finland. He won in Finland last year after producing a perfect performance, so we hope he'll come back stronger."
Despite winning in Mexico – which was almost derailed when he crashed into a spectator car park near the finish – Meeke has had a string of disappointing results, including this weekend's roll after his right rear clipped a bank and damaged the roll cage enough to force retirement. He rolled the car in Argentina, retired from the lead in France with mechanical issues and was forced out of Monte Carlo after sustaining damage. Meeke sits 10th in the standings with a mere 27 points, 114 behind leader Sebastien Ogier.
Prior to the Portugal rally in May, Meeke admitted that the season was not going as planned.
"It has been a really difficult start to the year. We have had lots of technical issues and I have made a few mistakes so to combine that all together, it has been difficult."
Matton said that the team was looking forward to working with Mikkelsen, describing the Italian rally as "more like a test session" that a race.
"A second rally will give him the chance to use the things he has already learned to get closer to the leading guys," Matton said. "Moreover, he is particularly fond of Rally Poland since he won the event last year.
"We also remain committed to supporting our young drivers with Craig Breen and Stéphane Lefebvre, who will both be competing at the next round. They both took part in the 2016 Rally Poland, and recorded decent performances. They will therefore have a good opportunity to show what they can do. Having said that, their main target will remain to get to the finish without making any mistakes."
The team will spend four days testing in Poland, with Meeke and Paul Nagle helping in a support role.

[h=2]Tanak takes Rally Italia win for M-Sport[/h] Sunday, 11 June 2017

Ott Tanak and navigator Martin Jarveoja claimed their first FIA World Rally Championship victory on Rally Italia Sardegna with their M-Sport Ford Fiesta, becoming the fifth different crew to take wins over seven events with the new generation of World Rally Cars. The Estonians powered through the closing stages to head Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila by 12.3 seconds with Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul coming home in third, nearly a minute further adrift.
In the Drivers' Championship, Sebastien Ogier continues to top the standings despite finishing down in fifth. Neuville closes the gap to second and Tanak inches into third, one point ahead of Latvala. In the Manufacturers' Championship, M-Sport continues to lead ahead of Hyundai and Toyota.
Tanak started the day with a 24.3-second advantage but instantly dropped five seconds in the day's opener when he overshot a junction, because a hole in the car meant dust was pouring into the cockpit. The problem continued but, luckily for the Estonian, Latvala stalled in the second stage and lost all the advantage he'd gained in the opener. Tanak went into the closing stages still with 25.5 seconds in hand to Latvala and was able to drop precious seconds in the Power Stage to claim his first World Rally victory in 73 starts.
"What can I say – it feels good!" said Tanak. "A difficult weekend but the first half of this season has been great. The new car and a strong teammate is making me push hard. I hope it's the first of many wins. It's coming together. It looks like we have a strong team all around and in the car too."
Following the frustration of the stall, Latvala then made another mistake in the Power Stage when the car just wouldn't turn in on a hairpin, the Finn's disappointment clear to see after aiming high for the additional points.
Neuville achieved his pre-event objective of finishing on the podium and ahead of championship leader Ogier. Small issues, including a brake problem, probably cost the Belgian victory in Italy, but he nevertheless leaves the island satisfied.
Esapekka Lappi was the revelation of the rally and the young Finn claimed a total of six fastest times in only his second event in the Toyota Yaris WRC. He finished fourth overall ahead of Ogier, who managed to overhaul Juho Hanninen who had more power steering problems today. He dropped to sixth in the final stage.
Mads Ostberg broke the rear suspension in the Power Stage but despite losing over two minutes managed to maintain seventh. Andreas Mikkelsen finished eighth in his debut outing with Citroen Racing, upping the pace today after two days trying different settings.
In the FIA WRC 2 Championship, Jan Kopecky and Pavel Dresler took their first win of the season and won the category by over two minutes to Ole Christian Veiby. The FIA Junior WRC and WRC 3 Championships were won by Nil Solans and Miguel Ibanez, the Spaniards claiming their second victory of the season.

Amazon's 'Le Mans: Racing is Everything' available for free this weekend

Friday, 16 June 2017

The first two episodes of Amazon's new multi-part documentary series, "Le Mans: Racing is Everything" will be available to stream for free this weekend at Amazon Prime. It's part of a "Father's Day special" the company is running that will also include free access to The Grand Tour premiere that featured the former "Top Gear" crew of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May trek across Namibia.

The Le Mans series, which premiered earlier this month, embeds with teams Porsche, Audi, Nissan, Toyota, Aston Martin and Rebellion as they race to build their cars and compete in the 2015 Le Mans race.
"Fans are consistently thrilled by the excitement and danger that is the annual Le Mans race. 'Le Mans: Racing is Everything' will take that excitement to the next level, giving Prime members behind-the-scenes access to what it takes to win this singular event," said Conrad Riggs, Head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals.

Foust takes Red Bull GRC championship lead with Ottawa win

Sunday, 18 June 2017

Red Bull GRC / Image by Red Bull Content Pool

Tanner Foust claimed the championship lead for the first time in the 2017 Red Bull Global Rallycross season with a statement victory at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on Sunday. Foust, who finished second the day before to local favorite Steve Arpin, used a brilliant launch off the line to claim the victory and close out the doubleheader event, part of the Ottawa 2017 celebration of the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada.
"What a finish!" Foust said after taking the victory. "There were a lot of familiar faces from yesterday, and I think we made a lot of rallycross fans up here. That's what it's all about, showing this great sport to new places. This track was pretty tough, and I'd like to thank BFGoodrich for making some tough tires. I'm incredibly happy — to get a 1-2 for our team out of that is really spectacular."
Determined to come back from missing Saturday's final, Scott Speed carried the momentum of the morning's Big Rig Brewery Pole Award into the heats and semifinals, sweeping his way into the top starting spot in the final. Next to him, teammate Tanner Foust had won the second semifinal, with Mitchell deJong on the outside.
After an aborted start due to a Chris Atkinson rollover, all 10 cars returned to the grid to try again. This time, Foust and deJong would both get the best of Speed off the line to run 1-2-3 in the early stages. deJong would hold off Speed for the first nine-plus laps, but on the final straightaway, Speed pulled forward to take second place by .195 seconds. Ontario native Arpin would fail to finish the race after first-lap contact, dropping him to second in the standings.
In GRC Lites, Cyril Raymond recovered from a pair of disappointing heat results to win his semifinal and take the top starting spot. He used a terrific launch in the final to take an early lead, never looking back on the way to his fourth consecutive victory. Dreyer & Reinbold Racing's Travis PeCoy nipped Alex Keyes at the finish line to grab second, as the teammates completed the podium.

Default Neuville leapfrogs rivals for Rally Poland lead

[h=2]Neuville leapfrogs rivals for Rally Poland lead[/h] Friday, 30 June 2017

FIA

Thierry Neuville has inched into the lead of Rally Poland this afternoon after a thrilling battle that saw the lead change no fewer than three times in three consecutive stages. The Belgian holds a narrow 1.3-second advantage over Ott Tänak after nearly 75 miles of treacherous competition in the first full day of the eighth round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Jari-Matti Latvala is third for Toyota just 5.3 second adrift of the Estonian after a tricky afternoon.
After persistent rain throughout the morning, conditions remained difficult this afternoon despite some respite from the downfall. While those at the front of the field benefitted more during the first loop of stages, rutted roads filled with rainwater proved more difficult during the repeated stages and those just a couple of cars back fared better. The first repeated stage was canceled for safety reasons, but after this Latvala headed back out in the lead and maintained his advantage after SS7.
However, the Finn was a bit cautious in the following stage and both Tänak and Neuville were able to close the gap, Tanak taking the overall lead by a mere second with Neuville setting the fastest time and coming to within seven-tenths of a second of the demoted Latvala. Another fastest time for Neuville then saw him overhaul both his rivals to top the leaderboard going into the second run around the Mikolajki super special stage.
Sébastien Ogier has been on the limit the whole afternoon but opening the road meant the World Champion was the first to power through all the mud and standing water and he lost time to his rivals as a consequence. While he was embroiled in a four-way battle this morning, he has dropped back and is now over 30 seconds adrift of the leading trio.
Hayden Paddon has run well this afternoon and after driving to survive the morning had a better afternoon after set-up changes aided his charge. He is fifth ahead of teammate Dani Sordo, the Spaniard also finding conditions a little more stable during the second loop. Teemu Suninen, in his first outing in a 2017 specification World Rally Car, is having a great run and the young Finn was fastest in SS7 on only his sixth stage in the car. His is seventh in the Fiesta and ahead of Toyota's factory driver Juho Hänninen. The Finn knew he'd have problems with the ruts and ride height of the Yaris, but mud-caked dampers meant he was unable to do anything about it before the start of SS8.
Stéphane Lefebvre remains the leading C3 WRC runner for the French marque. He has had a trouble-free day but is being hunted down by Mads Østberg, the Norwegian just a handful of seconds adrift in 10th overall. Andreas Mikkelsen, replacing Kris Meeke in Poland, had a better afternoon after the team repaired his broken suspension and made set-up changes. More at-one with the car he was able to set more competitive times, but then took a cautious approach in the penultimate stage having picked up a puncture before the start. He is 12th with teammate Craig Breen 26th.
After the Irishman broke a drive shaft this morning leaving him with no option but to limp through the stages, the afternoon has been little better and Breen described it as one of the worst days of his career. Esapekka Lappi, who was forced out with broken suspension, is the lead retirement of the day and the Finn will not be restarting on Saturday.
Ole Christian Veiby is having a confident run in the FIA WRC 2 Championship category and heads series leader Pontus Tidemand, albeit by a mere 5.1 seconds. Quentin Gilbert has moved into third following the retirement of Gus Greensmith who was forced out with broken steering. Nil Solans now leads the Junior WRC category ahead of Dennis Radstrom and Emil Lindholm.
