MR2 Turbo and Custom MR2 Intercooler thread
My MR2 Turbo comes stock with a CT-26 Turbo. I understand that there is a CT-20B turbo that would be an upgrade that bolts right up with no mods.
Does anyone know where I can find this turbo?
If not, then I can always upgrade the CT-26 with a better spool... Who is the best shop for the money that can do a TO4E-46 trim compressor wheel and a 15-degree turbine clip for me? How much for something like that?
Also if you have any other suggestions, let me know.... PEACE

I would like to upgrade my stock MR2 shitty intercooler. I have an Eclipse intercooler in good shape that I feel would be an upgrade judging by the size.
Has anyone tried to do a custom intercooler (well the pipes) before?
What are your thoughts dudes? Is this worth the time and whatever money to make this happen?

Mod's Note: I merged his 2 threads into once since they are directly related, that is the reason for 2 question posts that look seperate.
Well, Judging by your other post about intercoolers I can sort of judge where you are going.
The Ct20B is a great upgrade, it comes off of the 3rd generation 3sgte in the japanesse SW20. MR2Driver has made over 270whp and 300ish tq to the wheels with it. However, at an XAT dyno day in the summer, his stock intercooler wasnt fairing so well and we switched to a Greddy core and picked up around 20whp if I remember right. Plus the greddy didnt heatsoak at all as we whipped around town.
I would say that the eclipse intercooler is no where near the capacity and efficency of the greddy sidemount. I would also say that the Spearco sidemount is as good as if not better than the Greddy.
If it were me and I didnt want to have to go trunkmount, I would get a spearco sidemount and a CT20B for a great daily driver.
If you have the 91-92 transmission w/o LSD then at this HP level (240-280whp) is about as far as you want to go for tranny relibility as well as stability of the car. You probabally wont equal MR2Drivers numbers since he has a gen3, but you should make 245ish whp like one of the Gen2's with a CT20B at that same XAT dyno day. Judging by that low 13's and 12's are within your reach with the right tires and spectacular driving.

I know where you can get a ct20b for about 650.00 or you can go with a CT27 from ATS racing for about 850.00 got to http://atsracing.net/CT27.htm

I think I'm going to upgrade the CT-26 with a TO4E-46 trim compressor wheel and a 15-degree turbine clip.
This Turbo config will let me run a clean 16lbs of boost and take me to the stock fuel limits (Somewhere around 260 rwhp)
I'm shopping around for Best Price from a local Turbo shop....

You can go ahead and upgrade the ct26 if you really want to. I have had both turbos, an upgraded ct26 and a ct20b. Upgraded ct26 does not come anywhere near the ct20b in performance. An upgraded ct26 will definetly warrent you about 20-30 more hp over a stock ct26, but will also warrent you hotter charge temps. The stock intercooler will not suffice if you decide to race it. To me, the ct20b seems to run more efficiently. Performance wise, the upgraded ct26 made power up until about 5500 rpm then drastically starts dropping off. When I drag raced it, I basically shifted at 6k rpm because anything after that was basically useless. I can take the ct20b to redline in 1st and 2nd, 3rd gear i can take it up to 6500. The ct20b also spools up faster. Now you are going to pay more for a ct20b, but it's well worth the money in my opinion. Plus you can then sell your stocker for about $100-125 to even out the price some, and have no down time. An upgraded ct26 will get you around 225-230rwhp, not much more, the ct20b will get you around 245rwhp. This is typical for cars with basic bolt ons, such as exhaust, intake, ebc, and dp.
Now on the intercooler, if you want to save money, instead of wasteing it on a stupid eclipse intercooler, invest in a good water/alc injection system. They cost less then $300, and are highly effective. I think water/alc injection would be more effective then a greddy sidemount.

Ok fine, I'll forget about using the Eclipse Intercooler I have... So tell me more about this water injection... Do I still use the stock Intercooler? If so, I dont see how... cause its very restrictive. I can see how the water injections will effect the Air temp, but its still 1 out of 2 variables (Air temp =1 and Restrictive = 2).
Where can I get the least expensive CT-20B? I just got my JE pistons and crank so I need to resolve the turbo upgrade issue real soon, cause its all going back together.

I have a ct20b and plan on upgrading the intercooler with an alcohol spray on the core alone , or going w2a, or trying both. Im on a tight budget of no real money to spend (cant afford big waste of money ic's) . You should go with what was posted above basically. As for the mitsu ic , the ct26 and 20b are much bigger (imo) than the little mitsu 17g and 20gs so how well that is would work is trial and error . I wouldnt put that thing on my car though. Oh btw, I wouldnt try to the least expensive ct20b , got the mr2 board they always have a guy pushing a few , or just ask and youll have a better chance there maybe.
