Question Muffler question

Is it possible to weld a muffler that has a 2.5 in. inlet to a 3 in. pipe? Do they make some type of coupler you can use to do this. I figured it should not affect the flow to much and was curious if you could get it to fit.

muffler shops should have a reducer they can weld onto the 3" pipe to make it into a 2.5" My question is why would you want that?

I'm no Mechanical Engineer, but I do work with a few who are car junkies.

As the exhaust gases cool down, volume contracts (See PV = nRT from chemistry) and gas velocity gets slower. Thus, having 2.5" ID instead of 3" exhaust near the axle-back is not as big of a flow reducer as, say, having 3" to 2.5" close to the turbo. If anything, we're talking 1 or 2 horsepowers here. I don't think it'll be enough to notice at all.

Turbo XS even used to sell a midpipe that would bolt to their monster DP and taper for use with stock or 2.5" axle-backs.

josh, why not see if they make a silencer for your muffler. I had one on my Apexi on my neon and it quieted it down a lot and they usually dont restrict that much. Plus you have the option of taking it out should you hit the track or dyno.

mike, i have a silencer but it only screws in on one side so it vibrates. the other thing is i hate the way a silencer looks in my exhaust. i also just bought a high flow cat that will be going in this weekend so we will see how much of a diff. it will make. i still might buy a muffler if i can find one that looks like the stock dual tip. my neighbor is a retired welder so he will do all my exhaust work for free.

Sick of the noise or did you get an exhaust ticket? Mine is really quite its got a resonator or maybe muffler after the flange where the cat would be. I ll take a pic if you like, then the rear doesn't change at all.

You could always buy a resonator and have it inserted into the midpipe if you want to cut down on the noise. The high-flow will cut down some also.
