Hey guys,

I'm planning on going up to Ga/Nc/Tn and was going to get some tail. Sorry couldn't resist.

As this will be my first time in a car of any rear handling ability , any do's and / or don'ts you'd recommend?

I've been to Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and Cherohala Skyway, Graham Co, NC website and have printed out the radar enforcement map. Also been told it's wise to talk to groups of people at any entrance as they can give you heads up on law enforcement, road conditions, etc..

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Don't drive as fast as you can, have some in reserve. In all seriousness, you can go a steady 30mph the entire way and still have an awesome ride. There's other traffic on the road after all. Keep your head about you. My rule of thumb is to not make the tyres squeal, as it means you don't really have anything left. Give yourself plenty of time to slow down for the corner until you get used to how the road flows. There are some pretty nasty switchbacks though. Look ahead, don't get sick. If you feel woozy, pull over. Don't tailgate bikers since they might go down.

DO NOT CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES!

oh, and have a good time while you're up there! I would recommend taking the Dragon->Cherahola loop. There's also the Road to Nowhere, and my personal favorite, many fine gravel roads. There's a good one that sort of runs parallel to the Cherahola. I'm going up there at the end of this month for a weekend visit.

 

Also remember to watch out for someone else coming too fast the other way. Just because you might not cross the double yellow, doesnt mean someone else wont

Been there 4 times. the best advice is already been given... Well except for:

DONT GO OVER THE EDGE

3/4 times I have gone some dumbass that thinks he is a pro driver always goes over the edge.


Dont cross the yellow, but more importantly be prepaired for other cars/bikes to cross.

Dont think you can get going 75, like it was said I find 30-40 MPH is a good cruising speed. Start slow and get comfortable.

What ever you do, dont say anythign bad about bikes.. LOL Bad place to do that!!!

Also, pay attention to signals bikers give. They probably wont signal you, but if they do, means something is coming up. Bikers are better than car drivers about signals

 

That one is very good. Odds are if a biker is motioning for you to slow down, it is for a reason (read: BIG TRUCK COMING, or an accident scene). I believe if they pat the top of their helmet it means something also, like a cop is up ahead... but I can't remember the exact meaning.

 

I've never been myself but...

+1 for what these guys have already said about the bikers.....respect there(our) space and signals. Also watch for THEM crossing over the yellow lines, they are also guilty of riding beyond there abilities sometimes.
