Actually a dual mount setup like Rich was talking about is not bad. If you switch to the 225TT intake manifold you will actually have less piping than a front mount. The pressure drop is normally the same through one big intercooler versus two smaller ones. The main benefit of the side mounts would be that they would not block the radiator. Some people have noticed higher coolant temps with a front mount. Air wont flow through something if there is no free exit.
Of course none of this has much to do with the original topic of intercoolers for the S4.
