Albert De Alba Sr. unveiled his 1963 Chevrolet Impala at the 2011 Los Angeles Lowrider Magazine Super Show to instant acclaim. He inherited the car from his father-in-law, Luis Padilla, and spent six years constructing “El Rey”
(Spanish for “The King”), a name derived from Padilla’s favorite song by Vicente Fernandez. De Alba Sr. covered almost every surface with a combination of candy paint, chrome plating, and metal etching.
The geometric design of the paintwork accentuates the lines of the car’s body and extends into the engine compartment, trunk, and undercarriage. “El
Rey” has been called the “pinnacle of modern lowrider culture,” and it has garnered admiration from communities both in and outside of lowriding. In addition to being named Lowrider of the Year from 2011 to 2013, it has won
awards at SEMA and the Grand National Roadster Show, and it has been exhibited at the Essen Motor Show in Germany and the Classic Legends Car Show in Nagoya, Japan.
