Zora Arkus-Duntov longed to enter a Corvette in the 24 Hours of Le Mans to establish an international reputation for the car. In 1959 he persuaded driver and team owner Briggs Cunningham to privately enter three Corvettes in the prestigious French race for 1960. The number 1 car exited early after skidding off the track during a rain shower. This car, number 2, would last 207 laps as a pace setting "rabbit" before its engine gave out. Car number 3, however, would finish first in its class and eighth overall despite serious overheating issues that forced Cunningham's crew to pack the engine bay with dry ice to keep it cool during the last few laps.
