A man eyes another woman. MANHUNT is used with permission from Raymundo Archila. Learn more at https://raymundoarchila.com. Diego is at a party with his girlfriend Marisol. But despite his significant other's presence, he can't keep his eyes off other women, chatting them up even with Marisol just a few feet away. But then he spots an especially magnetic woman across the room. After Diego and Marisol fight, he pursues the mysterious other woman.
She's seductive and receptive, and she lures him to a more private section of the party, but Diego soon discovers she's more than he bargained for. Directed and written by Raymundo Archila, this intriguing and sexy horror short paints a rich atmosphere of hedonism and libidinal possibility that pulls viewers in from the start. Through pulsing music, richly dark cinematography and elegantly seductive visuals, it tantalizes with a glamorous, sexy world, in which Diego drifts among what feels like a bounty of beauty and seduction.
But then the storytelling leverages its considerable command of craftsmanship to turn the tables on Diego, who soon discovers the perils of unbridled and unprincipled lust. The writing is straightforward and solidly constructed, deftly laying the outline of Diego's situation and character, from Marisol's jealousy of Diego's wandering eye to his rogue-like behavior. It also tracks a mysterious woman drifting in and out of the party, tempting Diego from afar at first. Actor Jesse Tayeh perfectly captures Diego's rascally scoundrel-like demeanor, though he also injects
Diego with a winking, opportunistic charm that makes him fun to watch despite his foibles. But it's also no surprise when Marisol finally loses patience once and for all with her boyfriend, breaking up with him at the party. This gives Diego the freedom to pursue the hypnotic woman he's had his eye on, and the sequence as she signals her interest and permission for him to pursue her is unabashedly seductive, building up suspense to what he expects will be a passionate encounter.
He can't help but be pulled along, but once he's in the woman's grasp, he discovers that there's more to the temptress than her beauty. Gripping, alluring and provocative, MANHUNT is based on the Central American folklore legend of "La Siguanaba," a shapeshifting spirit that lures susceptible men into danger by preying on their unbridled attractions. The notion of a seductive monster runs through many different world mythologies, but the distinctive Central American flair makes for a fresh and memorable take on the horror genre, rendered here with great
finesse and confident storytelling. Horror is a uniquely elastic genre, one that is both rich in conventions and traditions and yet always incorporating new ideas and directions to keep fans intrigued. LA SIGUANABA makes the case for even more culturally specific-inspired stories, proving that fear and terror are universal emotions, but are often made uniquely imaginative through other cultures and contexts.
