1954 Victress S1A

This Victress S1 has a great individual history, but also quintessentially represents the history of the American Post-War Sports car. Several notable automobile personalities were involved with the car such as George Barris, Wally Parks, Bob D’Olivio, Robert “Pete” Peterson and indirectly Wunibald Kamm. Starting in the postwar years, Fred Bodley co-owned a high-end repair shop for Rolls Royce, Bentley and other foreign cars in Los Angeles, California. By the early 1950s, he started working at Trend Inc., the umbrella company owned by Pete Petersen and which published Motor Trend, Hot Rod and other automobile magazines. In early 1954, Fred Bodley, now the Technical Editor of Motor Trend magazine, acquired a Victress body from the newly formed Victress Manufacturing Company, which was a partnership between Doc Boyce-Smith and Merrill Powell. Bodley used a chassis from a mid-1940’s Ford, which he shortened and modified to fit the 100 inch wheelbase of the Victress S1 body. Bodley’s finished Victress was a well-engineered and aesthetically appealing car in its era, with raked windshield and interior by George Barris. Sadly, Bodley passed away just after completing the car, The car was displayed, for sale, on the office floor of Trend Inc. Chuck Glover, a Trend Inc. employee bought the car, receiving congratulations from friends and colleagues, including a personal note from Wally Park, founder of the NHRA. Glover kept the car for seven to eight years. The next owner planned to build a hot rod, but this plan resulted in the car sitting outside and deteriorating for 40 years. The Victress S1A built by Fred Bodley is a car that highly represents the best of post war American sports cars; the car scene of the era and the personalities involved.

1966 Cannara

Ray Cannara, a native Floridian was a successful designer from the start winning a $4000 scholarship in the 1962 Fisher Body Guild contest at age 15. At 18 he was accepted into the prestigious Art Center for Transportation Design located in Los Angeles, California. Unlike most fledgling designers, Cannara was already working on his first full-size car design when he started Art Center in 1964 – a car he would drive from Florida to California in 1966 during his college years. Ray’s mentor at the Art Center was world-renown Strother MacMinn – a designer who most consider one of the most influential of his time. Ray’s car marks the first of a movement of Wedge-shaped cars that became the focus of designers at Bertone and Pininfarina, and other, in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Ray modified the frame for the Cannara I from a 1958 Chevrolet, to support the highly individualistic body. The styling of the car extended to the cockpit and dashboard as well. Ray kept the car in his possession through the mid 1970s when he sold it to a friend, but soon languished in storage. The team at Undiscovered Classics found the car in 2015 and worked with Hemmings Motor News to identify what it was and who built it. Restoration started in 2019 and was finished in early 2022. The debut of the fully restored Cannara I is planned to occur at the 2022 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

1969 Asteroid

In the mid-1960s, Bill Meador of Grand Prairie, Texas was inspired by the 1963 Chevrolet Monza SS design and moved forward with his friend Jesse Cochran to build their own Monza SS themed car in metal. The car was named the “Asteroid.” Meador studied the shapes and design on the Monza extensively and determined he could use some existing production panels to help reduce the workload to create the car. The hood from the Asteroid was taken from a 1966 Buick Riviera and welded in place. The front trunk was taken from the donor car – a 1960 Corvair Station Wagon – and used as the engine lid. 1965 Corvair rear fenders were used as the starting place for the rear quarter panels of the Asteroid. The chassis was a stock 1960 Corvair chassis which retained its original 54 inch track and 108 inch wheelbase. The only change made was to bring down the spring height front and rear. This makes the Asteroid one of fewer than 10 special-bodied Corvairs that were built on an original Corvair chassis. The Asteroid was successfully shown at custom car shows across the nation from 1969 to 1985 where a paint mis-hap retired the car. The car was in storage from 1985 until when Undiscovered Classics purchased the car and began its restoration. There is an unbroken chain of ownership from when Bill Meador built and owned the car until its present owners today.
