Graduated from engineering school in 1972, interviewed with one of the big 3 automakers. First question I was asked was how to actuate an airbag. Long story short, it would take another 26 years when in 1998 airbags finally became mandatory, despite prototype development at the time.
USA automakers were rabid about not wanting safety feature: airbags, seat-belts. and even tinted tail lights. At the time we were getting product drawing with both metric and English units in order to transition the USA into the metric system ... guess who killed that idea?
As pointed out below imagine how much further along we would be today with solar, wind, battery and other technologies if oil and auto executives and corrupt politicians had any ethics and vision. Also imagine how many fewer wars would have been fought and our soldiers dying to protect middle east oil. today the USA wastes about 68% of all energy generated from all sources usually though heat loss (rejected energy), please link to the Lawrence Livermore energy flow diagram -2019.
Another related documentary is "taken for a ride", which will give you another dimension to auto, oil and tire industries systematic dismantling of public transportation.

And of course because of liberal hatred of a prosperous economy and Pres Trump,
we must swear to blame Trump personally for everything that doesn't fit the official leftist political narrative.
