I attended that race in 65'. Hotter than hell then an unbelievable torrent. The Chaparral was far away the fastest car. The Ford GT was impressive but not fast enough. I remember waiting for the Chaparral to fail but it didn't, that was the biggest surprise. During race week back then, the Chaparrals along with many of the other cars were driven on the public roads at race speeds. I recall driving back to town and being passed by a string of cars casually lopping along at high triple digits. A great age of motor racing in it's most natural state without the conformity of regulations we find today. The informality of those days is gone forever.
