Thanks for posting this. Unsung heroes, there were and are so many. Merchant sailors, factory workers, medics... In the British Army the Pioneer Corps did this sort of work along with building bridges, making smoke screens, defusing mines and booby traps, building airfields, organising civilian labour to clean up devastated towns and villages, connecting vital utilities like water and electricity, burying dead and a thousand other jobs, including being Infantry, and handling POW's, many dirty, unpleasant, thank less and often having to sleep in ditches to avoid German shell fire and shrapnel falling from AA gunfire. Just like the men portrayed in this film. . My Father was a Pioneer soldier, later an officer. Three times by accident he crossed into German lines and claims the world record for turning round a Willis Jeep. Some of his men were killed. Mostly though he would only tell the funny stories
