A good friend of mine's father was a "belly gunner" in a B17 throughout the War. He got his 50 combat missions and made it home. Of his 50 missions he was shot down three times and was recovered by friendly forces all 3 times. He did fly on the great Dresden Raid and said it was a huge Fire, like picturing hell. Stanley died at age 56, tormented by physical ailments caused by so much high altitude flying. He was the "Belly Gunner" of his plane on all 50 missions. I was already out of college when he died and I knew him well. The War affected him deeply throughout his life. Just an "Oregon Boy" serving his country.
