Like many humble beginnings, MOMO grew out of one man's passion and hobby to become world's best known supplier of steering wheels. Though the company now produces much more than steering wheels, like racing seats, shift knobs and safety gear, the roots of the company go back all the way to 1964 when racer Gianpiero Moretti sought out a better steering wheel for his race car. His wheel, which he custom commissioned, clearly provided better grip because it was thicker than the existing ones and so the rest of grid quickly asked him to also make one for them.
This caught the eye even of then Ferrari Formula One driver John Surtees who promptly won the 1964 champion using a MOMO wheel. The little operation Moretti-Monza was now a full-fledged company and from 1969 production commenced in a factory in Tregnano, Italy. Thus the brand MOMO was born.As is common for suppliers in the broader automotive world, MOMO has had to strike a balance of supplying parts to auto manufacturers for regular road-going cars with providing the more specialized products for racing and the performance aftermarket. Getting this balance right allowed MOMO to continue to be at the forefront of racing development and collect many race wins for its steering wheels, alloy wheels and seats. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 6 Hours Watkins Glen in one year is one such achievement. The driver list is also a who's who of famous racing drivers: Mario Andretti, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Michele Alboreto, Michael Schumacher, Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart., Clay Regazzoni and the list goes on and on.Such a storied brand, associated universally with quality and winning races, deserves an ownership group and leadership team which carries on that tradition. Through a complete restructuring of the brand in 2011 to focus back on racing, the brand is now flourishing globally, not because the tradition has been upheld, but because the products continue to be of the highest quality and performance. MOMO also continues to be engaged at the highest levels of racing to showcase and use its own products.
