Rossi's Indy-winning car to be auctioned

By: Marshall Pruett July 20, 2018 2:12 PM A piece of racing history will go under the gavel next month as the car Alexander Rossi drove to victory at the 100th Indianapolis 500 heads to the auction block.

Rossi’s Andretti-Herta Autosport Dallara DW12-Honda has been consigned to Mecum Auctions for its August 25 event in Monterey.DW12 037, which moved to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum after it was removed from the team’s pool of active cars, will be auctioned as a rolling chassis.Once IndyCar’s new engine formula gets closer to its introduction in 2021, Honda Performance Development will make the exact 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 Rossi used to win the 2016 Indy 500 available to the new owner.According to Mecum, “By agreement with Honda Performance Development, the original race-winning Honda engine will be returned to the chassis in 2020, and the car is the beneficiary of a most unusual 100-year engine lease – almost unheard of in these days of proprietary racing-engine technology.” No estimate has been provided on what this one-of-a-kind piece of Indy 500 history will command.
