Ford Performance confirmed what's been expected for months with Tuesday's announcement that its Mustang will race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2019.
The Mustang will be Ford's fourth different model, succeeding the Ford Fusion.

Edsel B. Ford II. "Mustang is a car that is woven into the fabric of our country, and it's only right that we put it on the track in NASCAR's most visible series. I can't wait."
A public unveiling of the Mustang will be done at a later date, and Ford says the Mustang is still going through the initial testing. This summer it will be formally submitted to NASCAR.
"We're combining America's favorite sports car with America's top stock car racing series," said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports. "Mustang always has been about affordable performance, which can be traced to innovations we've made competing in racing, like NASCAR. Mustang is a perfect fit for our racing heritage today and tomorrow."
By making this move, Ford will join its counterparts with an updated body. Toyota introduced the new Camry last season and Chevrolet moved to the Camaro beginning this year.
Previous Ford models were the Thunderbird, Taurus, and Fusion.
The Mustang has been competing in the Xfinity Series since 2010.
