Yeah, the method that he got his revenge was way over the normal top. But if he had just knifed each of the gang and then thrown them in the river to disappear it would have been a dull movie. Plus that super fanatical cop wouldn't have been involved. Considering who got murdered first he was trying to strike fear into the killers which he did.
