This past weekend, nearly 300 SCCA autocross competitors trekked to Toledo Express Airport in Swanton, Ohio, for
the final round of the Tire Rack SCCA Solo Championship Tour. This 10 weekend autocross series culminates in a winner-take-all SCCA national championship event in Lincoln, Neb., during the first week of September. While not a points series, the Solo Championship Tour leading up to the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships sets the stage for what will undoubtedly play out at Lincoln Airpark – consequently, competition is tight all year long, with competitors never failing to put forth their best.
One of the tightest class competitions at the Toledo Championship Tour during the July 29-30 weekend was Street Touring Ultra. Composed of modified Nissan 350Zs, Subaru WRX STis, C5 Chevrolet Corvettes and the like, STU is a fast, demanding class with some of the nation's top drivers contending. At the Toledo Tour, 20 drivers showed up, with Andrew Ramos besting all to eke out victory by a scant 0.141 seconds.
Luckily, Ramos posted in-car footage from his winning run on the second day of the two-day competition, allowing us to experience what it takes to win in SCCA's national-level autocross competition.
