My wife, Tonnie, is campaigning for a position on our local West Bend School Board. Earlier this week, she spoke at her very first public forum at the Moose Lodge in town – and I have to say, she really knocked it out of the park!
One of the main tenets of her platform is "restored cultural excellence."
It's actually something the two of us discuss quite often as it relates to Delta Defense and the USCCA, especially considering the immense growth we've experienced over the last few years.
One of the common questions we field – and one that's come up several times now during Tonnie's campaign, as a lot of people in our community know her and the work she does through Delta Defense – relates specifically to culture:
"How does Delta Defense maintain such a good, happy culture?"
Tonnie and I had a long conversation about this just this week, and she asked me to help her write up a little something that she could post on her campaign Facebook page and website.
What it really comes down to is servant leadership.
Here's what I mean by that:
You see, in many companies, the CEO is at the top of the proverbial "org chart" pyramid. But not at Delta Defense. It's actually the exact opposite. Our pyramid is completely upside down: Our CUSTOMERS are at the top of our pyramid. Why? Because they're the most important group of people as it relates to the business of Delta Defense.
And me? The CEO? I'm at the bottom of the pyramid.
The truth is, servant leadership is not about command and control. It's about leading with love and aspiration.
Servant leadership is not inward-facing. It's customer-focused.
Servant leadership is not about me or even the other employees at Delta Defense. It's about YOU.
I see this principle in action every single day when I walk through the Member Services Department and hear our advisors talking to responsibly armed men and women all across the country like they are the most important people in the entire world.
Well, I'm going to let you in on a little secret: At the USCCA, those responsibly armed men and women ARE the most important people in the entire world.
Our culture is healthy and happy because we've made it about the people to whom we provide unparalleled service. Our "inverted pyramid" works because it serves YOU. And that means you can focus on protecting everything you've worked for and everyone you love.
I couldn't be more proud of my wife and all that she brings to the "West Bend School Board table" or of the USCCA and our amazing culture that allows us to provide self-defense education, training and legal and financial protection to the best customers in the entire world.
Take Care and Stay Safe,
Tim Schmidt
