By now you’ve heard that President Donald Trump has nominated Neil Gorsuch, an American federal appellate judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] Circuit, for the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) — the highest ranking judicial body in our great nation.

According to President Trump, "When Justice Scalia passed away suddenly last February, I made a promise to the American people: If I were elected President, I would find the very best judge in the country for the Supreme Court. I promised to select someone who respects our laws and is representative of our Constitution and who loves our Constitution."

By all accounts, it appears that the president’s nominee fits that bill nicely.

"I am a man of my word," President Trump said on Tuesday.

According to NPR, "Like Justice Antonin Scalia, whom he is in line to replace, Gorsuch has cultivated a reputation as a memorable and clear author of legal opinions. He also considers himself to be an originalist. Lawyers who practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] Circuit, where Gorsuch currently works, said he is a popular and approachable judge."

"Judge Gorsuch, 49 — who was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] Circuit, in Denver, by President George W. Bush — is an originalist, meaning he tries to interpret the Constitution consistently with the understanding of those who drafted and adopted it. This approach leads him to generally but not uniformly conservative results." [The New York Times]

The appointing of an individual to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia has been foremost in many American citizens’ minds for the better part of the past year. You’ll recall how millions of voters said that the future of the Supreme Court was one of the most — if not the most — important issues to them in the recent election.

Considering the life tenure of U.S. Supreme Court Justices, that's not at all surprising. At age 49, Judge Neil Gorsuch would have decades of important work ahead of him.

Although Gorsuch has a rather sparse record of ruling on the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Amendment, I'm optimistic after hearing his response to his nomination: "Standing here, in a house of history, and acutely aware of my own imperfections, I pledge that if I am confirmed, I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant to the Constitution and laws of this great country."

Remember what Thomas Jefferson said, in a letter to William Johnson in June of 1832, about being faithful to the Constitution? "On every question of construction [of the Constitution, let us] carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one which it was passed."

Our Founding Fathers understood the importance of arms and confirmed our God-given right to keep and bear them. I believe Judge Gorsuch, if appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, will uphold, in the spirit of those men, our ability to own and carry firearms for self-defense and defense of those we love.
