Back in the day the VW was designed the way it was because of the autobahns and the distances traveled in Germany ,air cooled ment no pipe no radiator ,no water pump, no thermostat, or temp gauge, and one less pulley ,it was easy to repair so it would not fit in today,s Euro car laws because it would not generate enough money for the greedy EEC of today, It went the same way as the Daf air cooled engine and its belt /expanding pulley auto transmission ,it lasted to long no one was making any money out of it . Put modern ingnition system on it and it will run for ever ,points always go off or burn due to bad condensers ,you can fit after market carbs and exhaust systems ,yes they do rot in the 4 corners but a easy no rush day with a mig welder sorts that out A color tune to sort out the mixture and a timing light was about as complex as it got !
