I'm not a hardcore drifter, though I might experiment with some of the organized events when they happen.
I started drifting as most of the people over the age of 25-30 here have said, long before I knew there was a name for it. My 4th car was a '76 Capri with an Olds 215 V8 swapped into it. That car BEGGED to be driven sideways, and I did so frequently. When I got a ticket for doing it on the street ("wreckless driving" they called it... all I did was kick the tail out a little bit on a big wide left turn with no traffic), I decided to get rid of the car to spare my driving record.
I started kicking myself for that several years later when I learned how rare and wonderful the 215 was! Oh, well.
I think my experience driving that car helped me to be a "natural" autocrosser when I eventually started autocrossing about 10 years later. Limit driving is limit driving... it all translates into various forms of motorsports.
