Richard Petty, the winningest stock car driver in history, has become a legend in his own time. At 33 years of age he has recorded over 100 career victories and continues to set new records in his famous electric blue Plymouth every time he enters a race. For the sake of comparison, Petty's career victory record in stock car racing is similar to Babe Ruth's career home run mark in baseball--a phenomenal accomplishment that will probably never be equalled! Petty, a likeable North Carolinian, was born and brought up in auto racing and followed in the footsteps of his father, Lee--a current member of the Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame. Richard won his first race in 1960 at the Charlotte Fairgrounds and from there developed the momentum that carried him to victoryon just about every major speedway in the Southeast. 1967 was his biggest record-setting year as he chalked up 27 wins, including 10 consecutive victories, and over $130,000 in prize money. Richard Petty is still a relatively young man and, as the sport of stock car racing takes on a national flavor in the '70s', fans from coast to coast are watching the Petty legend continue to grow. Wherever he races, all eyes focus on the famous Number 43 Plymouth; it's Richard Petty--the King of Stock Car driver
