The dealership is protecting their turf and their $90+ per hour labor rate.
Some cars are beyond the warranty period and a lot of people prefer to do their own work.
Some people collect parts in advance while they wait for the warranty to run out.

It's getting to where you really can't install your own parts anymore without the dealership voiding your warranty. Yes some aftermarket parts are fine and it will slide by at the dealership, but when it comes to major or even some minor mods it voids it. Even something as changing your own oil has to be done at the dealership, which cost an arm and a leg!
