The classroom part is good, the track time is less than an autocross school, and since other types of cars go to the SCCA racing school, the different car classes take turns going onto the track. The cost-wise down side is that roll bars, fire suits and other safety equipment are required.

it's not a race per say
but driving around the track for fun, no official timing
no fire suits needed
no roll bars unless you have a convertible
hours of rack time as apposed to minutes in autoX
you will go through a set of brake pads however
and your car will go through a thorough tech inspection
But you are correct, once you move on to actual racing the costs go up dramatically with all the safety equipment.
