With enthusiasts drooling over the FR-S and BRZ, it seemed only right that Nissan wizened up, and gave its enthusiasts something to clamber over too. Thus, the IDx concept was born, and Nissan told us— nay, promised us, it would be built. But in a new report by Ward’s Auto, it looks like Nissan might be going back on the promise it made. For shame.




“Will (the IDx) become something or not is debated, but certainly not (by 2016).” That’s what Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer said in the recent interview.
“It’s not easy to do, (and) if you do something like this and you manage to do a a vehicle at (a low) price, what else would you do on this platform? Because frankly to do a platform for 50,000 or 60,000 (units) a year — it’s not worth it.”




Understandably Nissan’s concerned that a production IDx may not be profitable in the long run. A new platform and a rear-drive, 4-cylinder powertrain just isn’t something Nissan is interested in investing in at the moment.
But, there is still some hope. Nissan’s had rave reviews from media and fans alike regarding the IDx. Hopefully based on desire alone, Nissan will dig deep in its bank account and deliver something truly worth paying money for. We hope.
