Here's one to start the thread:
Bullitt of course! Steve Mcqueen and those bad guys in their bold, black Dodge Charger sure made my blood flow; heart pounding! You can get on the edge of the seat. Of course, I appreciate and respect all kinds of cars that has something to do with it. I really relate to the cars.
I have an old car magazine with a detailed coverage of the movie when it was made. The scene where the Dodge heads straight for the camera and then it goes blank is very interesting. The Dodge actually smashed into the camera because it couldn't turn fast enough. They recovered the footage and used it in the movie.
Those stunts should have torn the cars up. The Mustang needed beefing up pretty much. The Dodge already had a tough suspension but it was beefed up also. The Dodge engine was left stock. Still they took a beating. The Dodge lost several hubcaps in the scenes. Speeds reached over 110 mph.
The last scene almost got scrubbed. The Mustang beside the Dodge had the Dodge hitched to the Mustang. They let it go almost too late and the momentum carried the Dodge too far. If you look closely, the Dodge almost flew over the barrels, then expoloded. They had to keep the scene but it still looks terrific!!
After that, I always loved the Dodge Chargers, especially black ones. I always liked larger stock cars anyway. Ford Galaxies were to be used for the bad guys but they couldn't take the punishment of the chase, so good ole' Dodge to the rescue.
By the way, in 2007, Bullitt was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
