Sounds like BS to me. The major reason given was that if you used breathers and didn't change your oil regularly, you engine would wear out prematurely. I would suggest that if you don't change your oil regularly your engine will wear out prematurely anyway.

OTOH, my engines never die a natural death anyway. I've never worn one out in my life. Mine always die a violent death before they reach retirement age.
