P1X or B4N!! RB25DETTTtttttt.....
ok damnit. heres your pics.
a few words about this swap.
1) its big
2) its heavy (720lbs shipping weight)
3) its got LOTS of torque
4) its heavy
5) its ugly with the stock intake manifold
6) the car is very nose heavy
We used the unstable hybrid motormount relocation kit to set the motor in, and believe me, they live up to their unstable name. the plates were made out of thin gauge steel and allowed the motor to be rocked back and forth by hand once in. We found that the turbo on the RB was, in fact, REALLY bad so the customer decided to upgrade it before it went in. I called up good ole' enthalpy for a few suggestions and some brainstorming on a turbo and we both agreed on the T3/T04E .50 trim .63 A/R stage 5 wheel. the turbo bolted to the stock RB T3 exhaust manifold flange. We also ordered an HKS external wastegate and had Glen at Hybrid performance modify the factory exhasut manifold to accept the wastegate flange. He did a flawless job milling the hole right at the manifold collector and tigged everything up great! with everything bolted in and the harness connected, we made an initial startup just to confirm that it ran.
Typically, most swaps havent been run in a few years, and some can be a little finicky when it comes to the first startup. We connected the battery and it fired up first try. I dont even think the crankshaft made a complete revolution before it started. Knowing that the car ran (and ran well!) we buttoned up the intercooler piping and what not and sent it back to Glen to have the downpipe and wastegate dump fabricated. Believe me, we wouldve attempted it, but i didnt see how a 3" downpipe was going to fit. But he made it perfectly.
the initial test drive showed that our radiator cap sucked and that coolant is hard to get off a windshield when the washer bottle is empty. the car pulled EXTEREMLY hard and the open wastegate dump sounded menacing. but, the customer was working on a tight budget so he couldnt spring for an aftermarlet blowoff valve. we were forced to use the factory recirc valve and i modified the recirc hole so that it wouldnt bypass any air beside that which leaked passed the plunger. this, of course, caused it to run rich and the car produced a miriad of flames out the ass. at one point i looked in my side view mirror to see if the flames were lighting up the ground and the fireball (read: mushroom cloud) blew well past the quarter panels and above the trunk lid.
what a monster
luckily, some random guy in a wild ass integra pulled up looking for KJ and asked what we were up to. it just so happened that a buddy of his had an extra radiator cap that we could use. so we slapped it on and made out treck back from hybrid to XAT. the car drove great for the most part, but showed signs of a VERy heavy nose and also showed us that our intake for the turbo was too short. the next morning, we made a new intake pipe for it and the car drove great! i took martin for a test run and modestly told him "its about as quick as a rasied boost stock SR" as i was finishing my sentence we were at the top of second, completely sideways down Lois Ave pointed towards the soft shoulder. i corrected it with a shift to 3rd and the tires still protested like a hippy at a political rally. the car was so nose heavy now though that th erear brakes became touchy and the car pushed around turns.
we had our fun with it and the tiem came for the owner to pick it up and tow it to its final resting place in the hands of a 17yr old in ATL.
