A couple gallons of gas for research purposes goes a long way IMO. If I had never tried to break 35mpg I wouldn't be capable of showing restraint and letting the 6000lb SUVs pass my itty bitty mid sized sedan on 2 lane country roads. Besides, you can always make an excuse for the trip like a favorite bar, junkyard, etc. Even at $4 a gallon (gas hogs excluded) a relaxing 2-3 hour drive is chump change compared to damn near any other way to spend your time.

Love the weight reduction, of course...as we all know I'm CRAZY for it. Right now I'm tied up as far as my car goes, can't afford anything but I'm still doing quite a bit of productive planing. I don't see anything I want to do adding to gas mileage however, unless I can find some nice light OEM seats at a junkyard.
