I think Adam is correct as well. If you look around, most local and regional events are being run 1/8 mile. It helps to level the playing field between all the different power adders. Nobody that has set their car up for 1/8 mile events is going to drag their junk out and run it 1/4 mile untested for 1 event when it comes to town.
At one point in time, the racers were paid by advertisers, not by the track so much, so EVERY event they could show up to made them money. Now the racers rely on the events for payout and only go to the ones that net the most profit. And this is the reason there are no fans in the stands.
