Look at the latch part on the hatch itself. You'll see 2 large Phillips style screws. These are going to be a mother to get undone due to the fact they are tapered head screws. If you'll take those loose you can shim the latch and make it engage the catch. I had a similar problem on a CRX of mine. Silly broad before me closed it when the latch wasn't acting right and got the alignment all outta whack. Keep your latch lubricated and try not to slam the hatches on these things. The sheetmetal is thin and in turn makes the alignments sensitive.
