Apparently there is a box inside the door that is mounted next to the striker (the steel rod that actually holds the door shut that you can see from outside) all the rods from the handles go into it and push levers that operate the door striker and so on.

Mine is worn out and I need it!!! Badly!!! Let me know if you have one that works I will pick it up with cash asap.
