And it is not like he is making 400 + h.p. at the wheels or something. On his car a set of 4.30's would make a huge difference and effect drivabilty very little. Once it is in 5th gear it will not eat much more gas than the factory gear for those that say the m.p.g. will get bad.
So to answer the question, GEARS.
Scott have you seen whats involved in installing gears in the IRS? It's not pretty. You pretty well drop the entire rear suspension on the car. The entire pumpkin has to be removed from the car which takes a lot of labor to get to that point.
The 99/01 Cobra's have weak IRS setups. If he installs a tall gear in that rearend it's going break period. First will be halfshafts ( a good set cost about $800). Next will be the diff as the 99/01 IRS's wheel hop regardless.
Following those issues will be a vibration problem which will require a driveshaft. Mind you noone makes a driveshaft for the 99/01 so it has to be a custom job.
For those of you telling him to go with a tall gear with the factory IRS have no clue what your talking about. If you don't know about something don't mislead them with bad information.
Now if Will goes with a live axle then yes I would agree the 4.30's would make a world of difference.
