Yes, it's fine outside the car.

I have a 4GB regular SD card and it does about 30 mins of 720p at 30 fps. Never been bad at an autocross. Ran out of space a couple times I forgot to turn the camera off after a run. Need to get a bigger card, just haven't got around to it.
