This is so true, i thought a text message worked until i went to court, and the judge told me damn near this exact same thing word for word.
It has to be written down and signed. now a days people can hack almost anything and make it seem like it was sent or typed by someone elses emails. there are certain cases where emails and txt message can be used but suing for $1500 or any dollars will not help ya any.
