First off SPAL rate there CFM mounted to a core, meaning there have more resistance and still move "X" amount of air. I have yet to see any of the same size move close to a SPAL. I have 2 - 12" SPAL fans mounted to an S2000 Koyo Radiator and it will still take your breath away when you crank the fans.
I don't think timing is an issue under normal driving, the other idea might be a very slight head gasket issue. I have seen a very slight leak frim the combustuion into the water jacket .
