SU stands for Skinners Union, the company that designed them. Made under license by Hitachi and others.
I wouldn't worry about the driveshaft angle. We run quite a bit of angle on rockcrawling trucks and with over 100:1 gear reduction they put out alot of torque at the t-case, more than any car. I've broke 5 axles but never a U joint. That's a nice swap, keeping a car light makes a huge difference
