The only way to rectify this is to have the previous owner request a new title and sign it over to you again.
Next time you buy a car keep better track of the title since before you transfer it, that title is the only proof the car is yours as far as the state is concerned. A bill of sale is nothing more than a contract between you and the previous owner, the state could care less about it.
