DSMs technically do not run a full harmonic balancer - it is a vibration damper really, the rubber ring provides insulation to accessories as vibrations transmit easily though tensioned belts. For example excessive crank vibrations could accelerate the wear on water pump, steering, and A/C bearings. However both turbo and non-turbo DSMs have ran billet aluminum crank pulleys for years without issues. Even after tear down there is no visible accelerated wear to main bearings due to lack of OEM damper.
Either way, it is your decision. In my experience, I ran a billet AL crank pulley on my stock motor for 100,000 miles with no issues.
