when I shift about 3K it sounds like something is free spinning...
I'd be willing to beat you are talking about the noise a bad/going back throw out bearing makes, but I don't know why the 3 grand would have anything to do with it

take it all apart, inspect, replace broken/worn out parts, assemble, enjoy.
