Your fuel pump should be mounted as close to the tank as possible. (Holley Blues work best as pushers IIRC)

On the carb, it's really not that difficult to do.

What is the list number on the carb? (hint, it's located on the choke horn and says something like "LIST 1850-5" or something)

Have you purchased an accelerator pump cam set yet? How about a few different jet sets?

The jets being the wrong size GENERALLY won't make it sputter. If it's sputtering upon tip in, then it is likely a problem with the accelerator pump cam. Basically, you are getting too much oxygen, not enough petrol. If it's sputtering more on the top end, then you may still be running out of fuel due to your fuel line SIZE. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge in it? This would help a lot.
