Check your ATF, similar thing happened to my Accord when I started to lose fluid. If it is doing things as badly as you have described it is probably empty.
That's where I was going to point. The flashing OD light on the dash is the trans controller asking for help. Probably low fluid, giving low line pressure. If it smelled, uh, that's not good.
