Its really simple....The small red wire comes from the key switch, when you turn the key to start, that wire becomes "hot". Once you let off the key it is no longer "hot". It makes the connection inside to "jump" power from the battery side of the solonoid to the starter side, so the starter will turn. Does that help any?
