I can't find the magazine I read this in, but it made perfect sense. Regular cars are like wine. They are practical, nutritional, and good for you. It is a regular staple you have with many meals in various cultures around the world. Sports cars are like champagne. It serves no practical purpose, it is just bubbly and fun. You pull it out when you are looking to celebrate or have a good time.

FWD is practical. It is the red wine of cars. Everybody makes front wheel drive cars because they are cheaper to make. Just pile everything up by the engine so that you don't have to waste money on more parts. FWD is also not very fun. Your front wheels are doing all of the steering, all of the accelerating, and most of the braking. You can't handle all those job really well. Something will get sacrificed. Give it too much gas into a turn and you will understeer. Few things in this world are more boring than understeer (wheel hop is worse....a problem that plagues FWD cars).

Cars like the Civic SI, integra Type R, cobalt SS, VW GTI, and others are all fun...but not sports cars. You can have a blast driving them, but in the end they are still practical cars that you can haul your friends and stuff in.

The term sports car has been butchered for a very long time. They even have the balls to call a Maxima a four door Sports Car!

Love your car, have fun with it, but don't try to make it something it isn't. I actually prefer sporty cars over sports cars most of the time....because they make more sense. I loved my CTS-V. It Sounded mean, was really fast, handled well, and was very practical. I could pick up three friends and their luggage at the airport and enjoy the ride home in my spacious and luxurious car or I could tear around a track enjoying the thrill of 400HP 400FTLBS of torque and the throttle induced oversteer that gives you huge smiles. My S2000 on the other hand is a sports car. There is nothing practical about it. I can't take more than one person in it, It is uncomfortable on long rides, I can't carry much luggage, and I lack many creature comforts. It serves no purpose but to put a huge smile on my face any chance I get to rev it up and tear around turns. Enjoy what you have and don't get caught up in marketing hype.
